Advantage of single grind on CQC-7A?

Just got my first Emerson, a green handled satin finished 7A. Love the knife so far. Just wondering. With this being a conventional V-grind, what is the advantage of being sharpened on just one side? Thanks from an Emerson newbie.

Welcome, the v grind is more for utility work. The chisel ground or one side sharpening is for defensive purposes. One of the other advantages is that chisel ground is easier to sharpen.

I probably didn't explain well. While the 7A is a v-grind, it is only sharpened on one side of the V. The other side is a V, but unsharpened, like the flat side of a chisel grind. Why?

Haven't handled one (they're around $375 in Edmonton if you can find one), but couldn't you sharpen the unbeveled side and have a conventional edge rather than a chisel edge?

Yes I can, but I'm trying to find out why Emerson makes it that way. There must be a good reason.

Thanks,
Steve Ferguson

It's supposed to be stonger. More matterial behind the edge at a lower angle. Not great for sharpening pencils, but fine for everything else.

This is a very good question and one I have asked myself numerous times about the Emerson line. I have purchased in the last 6 wks 3 EKI's. Comm., Mach1, and CQC7A(best of the bunch!). Sold and traded the Comm. and the Mach1 but am keeping the 7A. I for the life of me can't figure why the thick chisel v-grinds on his knives. To me they just plain don't make sense. I could and did get them sharp enough to shave hair but it seemed at that fine of an angle the edge just doesn't last except on the 7A. I know from using them and compaing them to other pocket clip folders I have that they just don't cut as well as my other knives and I can't get the 7A as sharp, although it is sharp. Even as sharp as my 7A is it still doesn't slice as well. They are built like tanks though. Probably doesn't help you but I am in a quandry about this myself. Keep'em sharp
