I read that keeping some folders open during long term storage is the coorect way store them. Is this correct? Why?

I do it during long-term storage to keep as little constant tension on the spring, be it a coil spring, liner-locking bar, integral-lock bar, kicker bar, what have you. The only two mechs that I can think of that don't really differentiate that much tension-wise in either the open or closed positions are the lockback and the Axis lock. There's likely some more.

In the instance of autos, not only is it taking tension off the spring, it is relieving whatever locks either the blade or the spring in it's closed position.

Excellent answer professor.
Are you passing through Atlanta again next week.

With the exception of autos, I find it hard to believe that the tension on the spring of a modern lockback or liner/side lock is sufficient to cause it to set even after many many years. A POS with paper thin liner might be at risk, but otherwise, I'd think the risk to the blade was greater than real threat to the lock spring. I could be wrong and I'm willing to be convinced, but modern steels and Ti (the most common lock spring materials) should not be impacted by such relatively small amounts of tension from what little I know of their properties.
