Adventure Medical recently sent me a notice about their "Escape Bivvy". It is a fairly compact reflective emergency bag that they claim to be made of a breathable material. Their prior top-of-the-line emergency bags were durable but relied upon venting to control condensation. Not very successfully, from what I have read.

Has anyone handled or field tested the new Escape Bivvy?

[And no, I don't know why the company uses the letter v twice in bivvy---unless that is just an alternative spelling.]

Not I
But I did go check out their site .. they seem to have some interesting gear but its just another place that doesnt ship international .. hate that :(

There should be quite a few retailers who carry their line. I expect one of them would ship to you.

I have carried AMK's ultralight "heat sheet" bags/blankets but I never bought the heavier bag because I was concerned about the condensation issue. If they have truly solved that problem, I'll probably pick one up. I hike in some remote areas and sometimes solo. Not recommended but I can't always find someone to join me.

If these are, in fact, breathable, I will pick one up. Hopefully someone with have a review on one soon. Thanks for the heads up.

Hopefully they will make both a single and double size, as they did with the vented models. For hikes with girlfriends, the double would be nice.

if they truly work like they are suppose to i will have a couple (though 50 does seem a bit steep) but if they work and durable then i won't have a problem with it, i suppose

If the "r" word on it is $50, hopefully some discounters will have it for $40 or better.

Given what other water-resistant, vapor permeable fabrics cost, that wouldn't be too bad.

Never tried this one. I have the thermolyte 2.0 which does what its made for. Its an emergency item and not something meant to be reusable. I tore mine at the corner seems when I tried using it on a cold night in conjunction with my sleeping bag. It worked, but then when I saw the damage I thought, well that was kind of expensive for the tiny bit of extra comfort it gave me and soon gravitated to what a much better investment my poncho liner was for the same price. Then again, I've also gotten away from the emergency bivvy concept and far prefer carrying an emergency tarp.

I have two nylon ponchos from Campmor that seem to be decent quality. One is regular weight coated nylon, the other lightweight silnylon. Neither is as sturdy as a military-style unit, however.

I'm just curious about how this new product performs.

Thanks for your experience,

Interested, but LMAO at the "condensation is no longer an issue" claim. Ridiculous.
I really just want a simple, water resistant cover to use in a pinch with a sleeping bag instead of carrying a shelter when an overnight isn't planned, or unexpected weather when sleeping in the open after things cool off.
Street price will be dirt cheap compared to a "real" bivy, so this might be a good thing for me.

I carry one of their thermal bivies on winter day hikes, it's definitely a little more "stout" than their emergency bivy (and also heavier and bulkier), I don't plan on re-using it much (knock on wood) :D

Owen,

Great to hear from you and I hope you are doing well! I thought of you roughly a month ago when I had the Basic 5 out.

I too am always wary of product claims. One of the reasons I'm hoping someone independent has tested the thing and can tell us how it actually performs in the real outdoors.

Judging from how long they usually take to release products after announcing them, I'd be surprised if we see the Escape Bivvy in stores this year. I don't think we've even been given the opportunity to preorder them, but I will ask the rep the next time I talk to him.

Thanks storl and mtwarden.

Kind of a bummer about long delays. That's got to be a buzz killer for a new product. However, at least they eventually release the announced products----unlike some firearms manufacturers.

Hey Dave:)
I too am always wary of product claims
Yeah, I kinda have a hard time believing that, if we do see some new physics-defying fabric that revolutionizes moisture management, it will debut in a product that retails for $50.
Doesn't mean it can't be a useful piece of gear, though!

Your comment reminds me of the scene from My Cousin Vinny in which the wanna-be lawyer asks the grits-cooking witness: "Do the laws of physics not apply in your kitchen?"

Unfortunately, the laws of physics always seem to apply in my camps.

I'm with the rest of you wanting to see some real testing and reviews. Interesting claims though.

I wonder if they spell it "bivvy" to help with IP claims.
