Well the surplus rifle bug finally got me. I ended up getting me a Yugo M48 Mauser from Mitchell's Mausers, the basic collector grade with a teak stock that looks a lot better than I expected it to. Right now I've got it stripped down about as far as I can get it. After I get some shuteye, I'll get to work removing all the cosmoline and staining the wood. I've already got the bolt decosmo'ed and oiled, along with a Czech VZ-24 (?) bayonet that I've had for ten years (and yes, it fits). ;) :D The Mauser tutorials on Surplusrifle.com and the cosmoline removal page on the Box O' Truth site have come in very handy.

If I had any advice to give to other milsurp newbies, its this: Learn how to disassemble your rifle, and to the best of your ability strip it down and get the cosmoline. On the outside, my rifle had very few spots of cosmo. The insides told quite a different story. These rifles IIRC were often dipped into big vats of cosmo. Get into as many nooks and crannies as you get and clean it off. Your rifle will likely thank you at the range.

I've refinished several military surplus rifles, and stripped the cosmoline and dirt out of many more. I love it. An afternoon spent discovering secrets. After you've given a war horse a thorough going through, you know the animal very well.

I miss those cosmoline days.

The DCM sold out of 1917s before I could get funds into them. :(

Byron's supposed to pick up a Mauser for me, and some 8mm.

I got my rifle cleaned and back together but I'm having some trouble with the mag spring and follower. When I try using stripper clips, the follower catches on the mag well. I'm not sure if I slid the follower back on correctly. Could one of you Mauser owners post a pic of how the follower is supposed to look when slid on?

My M48 is officially good to go. Turns out that I had had the mag spring on upside down. Rounds strip in with ease now. I put a few light coats of Tung Oil on for staining, I think that I'll go ahead and sharpen the bayonet some. I know that there is some controversy about sharpening older bayonets, but I didn't buy mine to increase in value and figure that it might as well have a decent edge on it.

That's the online version of the manual that came with my Mauser. I found it entertaining if anything else.
