Hi All,
After spending a few hours playing in the snow with my kids. We peeled of our snow gear piled back into the SUV and headed for the Reno, NV Cabelas.
Sit back and have a laugh at my in store Cableas adventures. As this is the first time I have been in a Cabelas retail store I will compare it to the only retail store that is comparable...Bass Pro Shops. IMHO both of these stores are very similar. I think that Bass Pro Shop's merchandize is laid out a little better than Cabelas (BPS flows better). They both carry just about the same products...ect, ect, ect. However, Cabelas has a much better display of full sized/head mounted animals:thumbup:.
Ok, now for the real comparison you are truly interested in "the knife departments"(Manteca, CA BPS -VS- Reno, NV Cabelas). Hands down the BPS retail knife department blows away Cabelas retail knife department:thumbup:. BPS has twice as many knives in their retail store when compared to Cabelas. BPS also had about 4 times the amount of Buck knives for sale compared to Cabelas.
Here is the interaction with the Cabelas knife sales clerks (I posted this same info about my last trip to BSP). The counter display area in Cabelas has knives on one side and Binoc optics on the other side. Only one sales clerk was staffed in this location. Therefore, I had to wait 10-15 minutes to ask a question or request to view a knife (maybe this area would have more staff at other times?). I was there at about 5PM on a Tuesday.
I did find the AG Bucks display area and it was located on the opposite end of the counter display from all of the other Buck knives?. They did have the Rosewood AG's in just about all modles that are in the catalog. They also had an Alpha AG in stag (Sweet) and they had a stag AG 110 in their display
.
I had to wait 10 minutes for the clerk to finish showing a customer some Bino's. Then he came over and I asked him to show me the Stag 110. The display model was tarnished but not scratched. I asked if they had more stag 110's in stock? The clerk said I don't know, if you want to buy one I'll check. He opened a locked cabinet that was located behind the other Buck knives on display and came back and said that's the only one we have! If you want it I'll get the box???(visions of BPS came flooding to mind). I told him to get the box I'll be back to get it; I have more shopping to do.
I came back to the knife department about 30 minuets later. This time I had to wait 20 minutes as there were 2 other customers asking questions. He looks at me and said I'll find the box (I was not happy with that response. But, not surprised that he had not got the box already). Well here we go again
..he looked here no box, goes into the back room no box, back behind the counter and finds the box
. I pay for the AG 110, a Pro Line 120(for my son), a 119 for my sons pal (his first Buck knife) and a bunch of other stuff.
When I get to the Hotel and open the box to show my wife the stag AG...I see the Sheath is missing
. Thank god we were staying the night in Reno!!! (Cabelas is 3 hours from my house). I go back to Cabelas and to the same clerk at the knife counter. He said oh that model comes without a sheath...JB...gets mad his face turns red and growls that this knife does come with a sheath, it's the maroon or brown distressed leather with the AG design stamped in the leather. Look at the add in your catalog...clerk gets the catalog and is so nervous that he can't find the knives in his catalog. Clerk takes out the printed LE card from the box and attempts to find the information on-line. I take the catalog and in a few minutes have the photo and description that clearly states "distressed leather sheath":foot:. Now he is on a mission to please his customer after he removed his foot from his mouth....here we go again...cabinets behind the counter...here it is...276 is stamped on back, said I..."wrong again". He said I'll try the back area again. Just as he is leaving an older clerk 60+ comes and clerk #1 tells him what's going on.
Now older clerk #2 tries to tell me this knife does not come with a sheath....now JB
is really getting pissed at the two stooges!!! Clerk #1 heads for the back area. Clerk #2 repeats every thing that clerk #1 did and is showing me total atitude....he pulls out the 276 sheath...ect, ect, ect. Then he pulls out a standard black 110 sheath and said with more atitude "this is the sheath that comes with the AG 110's". With a red face and my eyes popping out of my head I said to clerk #2 "I have one of these at home, I'm a Buck knife collector, a member of the Buck Collectors Club, and that knife comes with a maroon or brown sheath with the AG design stamped into the leather. I think there may have been steam coming from my ears by now also.
Clerk #1 comes back and said to clerk #2 "someone's going to get into trouble, all of the AG 110 sheaths are gone". He looks at me and said we will find you one at one of the other stores...he starts making calls. No Luck, he said we will just take this knife back and when we find one we will ship it to you. I said you are not likely to find another one...these are sold out on-line and a few fellow collectors have checked their local Cabelas with no luck. I said I will contact Buck myself and see if I can get an AG 110 sheath from them. Took the AG 110 and left. This all took an hour to unfold.
Well the staff at Cabelas worked a little harder to find the missing items than the staff at BSP. However, both corporations need to train their staff better and get their house in order...They suck. To add insult to injury when clerk #1 took the LE printed card out of the box to try to find information he never put it back. No sheath & no printed Buck LE card
. I'll post a photo of the stag AG later today...need some sleep.
