Advice about carbon handle

Hello, I have 1 question.
When sanding carbon fiber, shouldn't the cf pattern remain because there are many layers with this pattern-cf cloth? So no matter how deep I go, I should always see this pattern right?

I am making replica of my knife handle in carbon fiber. I bought cf plate and milled holes and pockets in cf plate I got.
I left 0,9mm on top and bottom that I planned to remove with sandpapper (in case of chipping or scratches or whatever).
And now that I sanded off bottom of the handle, the carbon fiber pattern disappeared and only black (plastic?) remains. Did I get scammed with cf plate or do I not understand how cf plates work?
I bought this one from ebay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/125x75-129...on-Fiber-Plate-Panel-Sheet-Matte/132210834454

Looks like it might have been very thin carbon fiber laminated over black micarta or g-10.

That product does exist but the seller should have been very clear about that if he wasn't.

Yes this is very thin layers of weave that are stacked together not interwoven carbon fibre. You can tell by looking at the edge. Good stuff has a wave pattern on the sides not straight lines. The bay post shows the stacked layers

looks like a 3 piece sandwich with the CF on the outsides? the ad should have stated that is not solid carbon fiber, but also i would have expected a set of solid CF scales to cost a lot more than $12.39 with free shipping, so i would have been suspicious about them.

You probably already know this but in case you dont carbon fiber is very bad to breathe, wear good protection.
It should have been listed differently. In my mind you should tread lightly with a seller with 97% feedback , thats a lot (233 this year) of unhappy customers

Thanks for answers. (Ofc I had respirator : )
I knew it was cheap, I just thought chinese people made it very cheaply. I guess seller deceived me with this description, but I failed to do enough research before buying.

Well, I finished the scale. It is 0,9mm thicker on top because I didnt sand off carbon fiber. Not sure if I should just sand off or not. I have 2 pieces, so I could do 2 versions. But it takes a lot of time, so I will just leave it like that for some time. If the extra thickness on one side bothers me too much, I may sand it off and have plain black plastic (on the bottom side it is still blue anodized aluminum)..

It's most likely unidirectional carbon fiber core with a show side as the cross hatch. This is often cheaper but is good for strength. I myself prefer to avoid this cf for scales but that's just my taste. What you've done looks great!

I don't think the seller was honest in there description at all.

If you want some better cf go with aj composites, carbon waves, carbonplate, or fat carbon. There's even more brands, if needed I can list some more.

it looks really good :) my first experience with CF was bad, it was thin CF sandwiched with a black acrylic center. imagine what that looked like when i shaped it lol. now i realize if its under $40 it probably not the real stuff.

Seller insists that it is carbon fiber, so I think this really is unidirectional cf. Thanks for all answers and great info.

This scale being too thick was really ugly, even though it had this pattern on top. So I just sanded it off to correct thickness. Now it has a rugged look, and there is visible part of another layer that I couldn't get rid of. I still prefer this over too thick handle.

I have another unfinished piece of this handle. If I figure out how to raise screw pocket height, I can actually keep the top pattern. I'm thinking about using epoxy to raise the bottom of pocket for 1mm. I have some ideas of how to do that but it will just become tl;dr to explain it here.

The look of unidirectional cf when it's sanded like that is preferred. It looks nice.

The vendor didn't specify that any unidirectional cf was used. They specifically said it was weaved cf. So while it is indeed all cf... It's false advertising what it really is.

If you order more don't go through them. Goto the places I suggested. Some of them are in Europe iirc. A&j is in America.
