I like to make some Boltaron sheats for myself.

I have several folders, swiss knifes and fixed blades.

I have read a lot of posts and a will use mostly Boltaron and some Kydex (colors).

I was almost selected the 0.080" thick, but today a read some posts in which reputable makers prefers the 0.093" thick instead of the 0.080".

I don't have an arbor press, I will build one with 3/4" plywood and foam.

So for a newbie with only one fixed blade longer than 8", wich Boltaron thick is better to start, 0.080" or 0.093"?

Please advice.

The difference between the thicknesses is really small. Its hard to notice when you have them both together, in my opinion.

However, if you are worried about molding it, I would go the smaller one.

I have not made many sheaths for large fixed blades but i think from what i have done, if want to make a pancake style for large blades i`ll go with .093 if it`s a taco .080 will be fine....IMHO

While some get by just fine with .080, I have always used .093 and will continue to do so for the greater strength over time and better lock with less material. There is also less flex in the sheath body with .093. Choice always will depend on what you are trying to accomplish. 0.080 may be a little easier to work with, but for my criteria, no less than 0.093 will do for fixed blades of any size.
