Advice for a beginner

What sort of things would I need for finishing a knife. Im not sure what or how to get the nice polish on the blade and to make the scales and tang blend and look nice and smooth. Ive researched all the heating and grinding a blade would need. But im pretty clueless about the final steps in making it look nice.
