Will be in that area soon and will hit AG's for sure! Really looking forward to it, lots of respect for what he and Goldie have done for the knife world.

Any advice for those of you who have been there before?

Other things to see in the area?

Thanks in advance!

I have been there once. Check out the AG russell branded knives. You won't see them elsewhere.
Also Bob Dozer's shop is close I think.

Sounds like a good time. I met him once at blade a few years ago and he was so nice and very knowledgeable.

I grew up in the area, and try to get back to A. G.'s store whenever I can. While there, take the time to handle any knives you've been thinking about. Make sure to ask questions to make the sales folks feel good, even though you probably know as much, if not more than they do.;)

Check out some of their "Russell's for Men" items, which are quite fancy, and worth a look, along with the customs that may be in the glass cases.

Another thing to make sure to look at is the case at the back of the store. They often have deeply discounted knives, that are usually top notch quality, but have been returned for some reason, or another. Some may be used, or discontinued, but definitely have found a gem or two, in my time. Two of my favorite knives came from his discount stock.

And by all means, be on the lookout for the man himself. Make a point of asking if he's around. It's always worth your while to talk with him. Just make sure to talk up his designs. :D

In the area: There's a HUGE Cabela's at the exit north of there ("The Promenade?), which is worth a stop.

If you are able to travel into Eureka Springs (about an hour away) it's a very romantic place to take your significant other, with lots of Victorian houses, shops and B&Bs. Avoid this if you easily get car-sick though, as it's a long and windy road (pronounced whine-dy;) )

Or, take the time to have a picnic off of Beaver Lake.

Definitely tell us how the trip went. I'll be down there, myself in about 2 weekends.

FYI, when I decide to retire, I plan on moving to Fayetteville, or Eureka Springs, and working for A. G.'s store for my remaining days, and going fishing every weekend. It's a beautiful area, and definitely gives me something to look forward to, someday.

PM me, if you have any additional questions about the area. My entire family lives around there, and I visit about once a month.

Check out the store hours before you go and give yourself plenty of time in the store. It is a great place to look at knives because the workers are very friendly and knowledgeable about knives. They are very patient and will gladly let you handle all the knives you want too . A good restaurant near there is A Q Chicken House . Let us know how your visit goes. Joe.

Definately ask to meet the man himself. He's a living legend and if you can strike up a conversation with him he can regale you with all sorts of stories from when he started in the buisiness and from all of the legends he's worked with, been friends with etc.

Plus, his and Phil Gibbs' designs are VERY cool. You'll get a chance to check them out in person. Get A.G. to walk you through a couple of them if he will. There's a LOT of thought that goes into them and they've come up with some tricks and features that some of the bigger companies could learn a lot from.

I was lucky enough to spend some time at the Russell Shop in 2012. Probably my favourite knife related event ever so far.

I bought a pinched peanut while there (among a few others). They brought several out from the back, so I could choose the one I liked best. The employees are very knowledgeable, helpful and patient.
