Hey all, I will be going with my girlfriends family to Gulf Shores Alabama at the end of the month. Last year, we went on a "deep sea fishing" excursion- one of the huge boats with 200 folks fishing an elbow length away from you on both sides:) I enjoyed it and we came out with a few Red Snapper (believe thats what theyre called), but i was looking into fishing off the shore.
I saw many folks doing it last summer, but i have no experience with it and would like to ask if anybody had an idea how expensive/ what kind of license and other gear id need for it. How easy it is, or is it even worth my time to try without experience? Really any tidbits you might have. Id like to go on a private trip one day but even the cheapest options ive found are pretty expensive. Thank you!

You got a cell phone ? I live in AL and we have property on the Gulf and in Florida I can help you out or hook you up . Send an email and we'll go from there .

If you want to save money on the private trip. Rent a boat w/GPS and buy an underwater structure map, available at most bait shops down there. Those areas of cover always hold something, might not be trophies but fun fights. The Gulf also has a dramatic shelf drop off some miles off the coast, ask the locals how far out it is where you are at. Right at that drop off is where Grouper hang out. While I was down there an old guy hooked me up with a pole and pointed me towards what looked like an oversized bass lure, about 11" long. He told me where the shelf was and instructed me to let out enough line for it to get the lure down +40ft and hug the wall of the shelf. Within 10min trolling the shelf we where catching Grouper. Not being familiar with what we were doing and only being armed with the little knowledge that the old guy gave us. We caught 2 dozen Grouper ranging from 7lb-28lbs.

Sorry just re-read the OP"s first post. Didn't realize you were fishing from shore and that you've prob. already gone on the trip.

Oh yeah i just went last week. Spartan, thank you for your offer, i didnt get a chance to contact you but we ended up doing other things in place of fishing! Thank you anyway, one of these days ill try coastal fishing, for now ill stick to swamps and lakes:)

Funny we used to always rent boats and go fishing . Last time we did these people rented a pontoon boat . They're were about 15 people on this pontoon boat and we actually had a fishing boat . The boat was maybe 100 yards ahead of us and the people clearly had never been on a boat in the ocean .

Wave after wave went on this pontoon and eventually the front end of the boat went in the water , when we got to them bout 15 drunk kids were swimming in the water , boat had flipped by this time .

We couldn't take all the people on our boat , we literally couldn't , so we got who we could made sure rest had life jackets and we're hanging on to our boat .

Out of about 10 boats that saw this or passed by as this happened 2 ended up stopping to get the rest of the people out of the water until the coast guard got there .

The guy who had actually rented the boat had never been I'm saltwater and all that . That's the last time I was on a boat in the ocean .

The screams of this guy thinking sharks were coming after Jim but it was only dolphins was enough for him to say he was going home if he ever made it to shore .
