Advice for shipping my next ESEE from US-Aus?

Hi guys, just wondered if I could get a bit of help from you all.

I am in Australia, and would really like to get my hands on a ESEE-3 MIL.
Here's the catch: there is only one dealer that I know of who stocks ESEE's here in Aus. They are a little expensive, but the main problem is that they have no MIL's in stock. So I am considering buying one from the states and shipping it over.

So my questions are:
Firstly, am I likely to have any trouble shipping such a knife over (I suppose I should ask this in the Asia/Pacific subforum)? And what should I look for as far as the type of postage/insurance is concerned?

And secondly, as I have no knowledge of US ESEE dealers whatsoever, could any of you give me some recommendations as to where I should start looking?

Thanks heaps in advance,
Dan.

Thanks mate,

Wow - their prices are so much cheaper that suggested retail, how can they offer such a discount? Even with the difference in the value of the dollar and postage added, that is far cheaper than I can buy here! Now I just have to hope it can get through customs!

Hi Danito,

I live in Sydney and ordered my RC-4 from www.knifeworks.com a few months ago.

Price was good, delivery was quick and I had no problems whatsoever.

With regards to customs I had no problem. I have since shown the knife to a mate who works in customs and he said that the drop point style of knife that EESE makes is fine for importing.

knivesshipfree is another top notch place. They do quite a bit of international shipping and Derrick will take good care of you!

Thanks for the help guys.

Flame13, did you fill out any paperwork with customs prior to importing to make sure it was ok, or just take your chances?

I was considering the clip-point but assume that it would be a bit more risky to get through customs than the regular?

I just took my chances when I had mine sent over. I imagine that the clip point would be a lot more risky to have sent over, I would not be surprised if it didn't make it through. There would be no harm in ringing customs to get a second opinion though. I'm sure they will be able to give you more definitive answers. Good luck!

Yeah, I think I'll just take my chances with the regular MIL, can't really see that I would have any need for the sharpened top, unless i need to stick a bloated cow on the farm

You could always put the top bevel on yourself in the future should you find a bloated cow. Personally, I think I would let the dingos have it if was swollen up.

As long as it doesn't have a swedge on top that, in the eyes of some paranoid customs inspector, could possibly be sharpened, you should have no trouble getting it into Oz. I've never had any trouble with fixed blade knives.

Well, I didn't have to go international in the end...

Just went and looked at cuttingedgeknives again (the only AUS ESEE dealer) and not only do they have more ESEE-3 MIL's in, they also now have the Junglas, Light Machete, Arrow Heads, and Izula scales in!!!

At one point I had an izula, scales, ESEE-3 MIL, Junglass, and Fire Starter in the shopping basket

It was over $700!!!!!!!!

So i just bought the MIL :D Now the wait until it arrives!!!
The price wasn't quite as good as iternational dealers, but cheaper shipping and it will get here faster. And as a patriotic Aussie, I like to buy locally.

Don't think I'll be using this knife to fell a tree like I did with my ESEE-5, but I'm sure I will be able to take some interesting photos with this as well.

The ESEE disease is becoming even more contagious. I actually smiled like a kid on christmas morning when I saw all the new gear in stock!

Really good. Only the second thing I have bought from them, but my ESEe-5 cam through registered post in about a week.

I've bought several times from cutting edge and have found them to be excellent and friendly. They are to blame for my current RAT addiction!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm in Victoria, got an RC-3 Mil, and RC-4 and an Izula through:

http://www.knifeworks.com/

Didn't have any trouble with it. Have a set if Izula scales coming in soon too, service from them has been good and their prices are very good. My only concern is that there is a lot of press lately about knife attacks etc and mention of new regulations, dunno what that means for us at present. Hate it when a few f-wits with cheap steel start stabbng people and screw it up for legitimate knife owners and users.

I'm in QLD, got mine from Knivesshipfree.com

Great people, nice and prompt, came pretty quickly, would definitely buy from them again.

Also, as far as laws go, we are allowed most knives other than assisted, knives with knuckles on them, and double edged or those exploding gas ones.

As for cutting edge, I've talked to him a few times, and he just refuses to budge on his prices completely, which I find kind of rude, because obviously I'd much rather support local people, but if he's going to be like that, I took it elsewhere.

Here is something you need to remember when comparing prices of an internet dealer against an in country dealer ouside of the USA. Most European and Australian dealers have a butt load of taxes to pay in order to get that knife in a store so you can put your hands on it before buying. These import and country taxes can easily double the dealer's cost of purchasing a knife for stock. So cut them a little slack since they are going the extra mile and dollar so you can actually handle the knife prior to purchase. ANd you can support your local economy as well in the process.:)

We have a lot of great dealers, including the internet dealers but holding down a brick and mortor store in country will always cost more. Mike

Also double check with your dealer on stock before ordering. Sometimes they show "In Stock" and they are anticipating a little ahead. For instance we haven't shipped ANY Junglas, Lite machetes or arrowheads just yet. So nobody actually has them in stock:)
