Hello BF friends- Can any of you recommend an orienteering type course either in group (I’m in Northern IL) or online. Basic map and compass type stuff to start out with. I bought a book but really think I’d get more info hands on. Maybe after that I would like to do a 3 day trek/survival type thing. I mountain bike a lot and would like to not have to rely on someone else should the situation present itself.
Thanks Chris

Do a internet search and try to find: Randall's Adventure Training Land Navigation, it has really good basic information about map and compass reading.

REI has classes and they also offer map reading and very basic survival class. Worth the $30 for the cost.

The one book you should have is Be Expert with Map and Compass by Bjorn Kjellstrom

Web search Peter Kummerfeldt, retired USAF Survival Instructor and all around good guy. Terrific person and teaches courses in outdoor survival and land navigation. Heck, he often teaches his courses in Montana. Why not make it a summer vacation road trip ?

Bjorn is dead. Bjorn Kjellstrom wrote the book. He was basically the father of orienteering as sport and recreation in the USA. He was one of the founders of the Swedish and USA Orienteering Foundation. He was also a co-founder of SILVA after he along with is brother, Alvar, and Gunnsar Tillander invented the Silva system and the protractor compass in 1933.

A good sense of humor & not taking yourself too seriously are great survival traits. You'll do fine. All the best - :)

Thanks for everyone's input, haven't had a chance to look at anything yet, busy weekend. Did a lot of hunting growing up and typical Boy Scout stuff but couldn't tell you the ass end of a compass. I'm 42 now, just want to get out and enjoy the outside more. Thanks again chris

Take the course I mentioned and you'll know how to use compass, properly use GPS, various map co-ordinate systems, etc, etc
