Hey all,
I'm re-handling a knife for my dad. It's his favorite Chinese cleaver that he uses in the kitchen. The original handle was a cheapo wood job that has gotten pretty gnarly over the last ten years that he's had the knife, so as a birthday present to him, I am giving his knife a serious makeover.
After going over the options with him (wood, micarta, bone, G10, etc...), he has gotten fixated on ivory paper micarta. He loves the look of the patterns that develop with it.
Since this is going to see heavy kitchen use, food contact, and has to be washable, I need to figure out how to get it to be as close to nonporous as possible. I know Micarta can withstand water, but i have Micarta scales on other knives and know that it sinks into the surface and the last thing I need is raw chicken juice or some other disease carrying crud to soak into the handles and cross-contaminate everything.
Is there a good polish/finish/clearcoat I could use on paper micarta to get it shiny and very smooth so that it can be washed clean without absorbing moisture? Remember this would have to be durable and food safe.
