I'm in the market for a production folder and could use some advice.

I've been looking around and I really like the following models and could use some input on them:

Benchmade: 630 Skirmish, 670 Apparition

Camillus: CUDA Maxx 5.5 Stiletto Blade

Boker: 12 Heckler and Koch

Cold Steel: Recon 1 Folder

CRKT: 6773, CR-4504

SPYDERCO: 36 MILITARY MODEL, Bram Frank Gunting

Hello Cabbit, I don't have direct experience with these knives :D , but I do know the companies and will tell you what I can (plus, I hope to inspire more comments, as I would like to hear others' thoughts, myself). Depending on what you are looking to pay and want the folder for, I would gravitate towards the Benchmade 630. I have a BM Griptillian and am really pleased with the knife. As a locking mechanism, I like the simplicity and strength of a framelock, which is what the 630 has. Also, the blade is well sized for a multitude of tasks.

The only other input on your list that I have is hear-say: I have read in various threads on this forum that the Cold Steel Recon 1 folders have a thin stop bar that can be prone to breaking. Cold Steel had said they were going to work on it, but I don't know if they have.

Good luck in your search.

Really? I carry a pair of Recons with my as part of my EDC rig and I have never had an issue with either of them. I have the AUS-8A models so that might be part of it. I hate the look and feel of the new ones.

I can say that the Spyderco military in CPM S30V is an awesome knife. Rugged, sharp, comfortable, and just all around cool. :D

I 've read (again, I'm repeating hear-say  ) that the first year/s were good, but the quality has since degraded. I've also read that the newest to be released are total junkers, particularly for the price.

Hey Cabbit

I don't own any of those knives but I've picked up some information so maybe I can give you more to think about.

I personally like the look and feel of Spyderco and Benchmade. Now, I've never handled anything by the other companies you've mentioned. Cold Steel seems to get a bad rap but at the same time I've heard solid things about their folders.

Is the size of this folder is a concern? The Military is a pretty big knife, over 9 inches overall with a 4 inch blade. If you are looking for smaller how about the Para Military? Has a nice compression lock, same steel, handle, blade shape, but with a smaller blade and smaller knife overall.

The Apparition looks like a nice knife, the blade design seems pretty useable, but is that even released yet? I haven't seen it anywhere.

Speaking only of the Benchmade and Spyderco, if you want a more classy knife that looks nice go with the Apparition if it is released. If you want a big, rugged, nothing fancy knife, go with the Military or the Para Mil.

Oh Yeah, the Gunting is a martial bladecraft knife. Are you planning on using the knife for this purpose? I've never owned one so I don't know how well it works as a utility knife. I've heard complaints about the ridge on the blade tearing up pockets and that the knife is difficult to carry in the pocket because of it. But again, I have no personal experience. Haha, hope this helped some :)

One of the reasons I'm looking at the Gunting is because I study Kali. To be honest it does look like it would be awkward to carry.

Folder size isn't that big of an issue, but I prefer a longer blade if possible.

Have you looked at the Lil Temperance by Spyderco? That might suit your needs, comes in both leaf and trailing point blades. Same steel as the military. The grip is supposed to be outstanding. Just another thought.
