Not necessary but it will clean up any little deformations along the edge!!! Once you are sharp you'll only need to strop it after some heavier use.....I do it before I put my knives that I used to bed every day though.! Just habit and its kinda therapeutic

I have a billy strop from Stropman who is now deceased (RIP) and the 4 compounds that came with.plus I also use a diamond emulsion from

A member here!!! Not sure if he sells compounds though.... Do you Don??? He should answer right here!!! He makes nice strops too.
I honestly have no clue what grit the compounds are just red, green, white & black..Black is the highest to red for polish...I'd imagine they're made pretty similar by all manufacturers though ..The emulsion is 1 micron..
