Advice on a multi-tool please

Hello all,
Yesterday my wife asked me what I wanted for Christmass and I was'nt sure, I really don't need a new knife but the Native at Wal-Mart would be a good blade for the price and I'd sure like a pretty Damascuss blade with turqoise in the handle but I just can't justify a 200+ dollar knife that I'd be afraid to use.

Then I thought, MULTI-TOOL!! I am in construction and need a screw driver almost daily as well as pliers and wire cutters. the thing is I am mostly in the managment side so I really don't haul around bags (Tool Belt) so a Multi-Tool on my belt along with my Buck 119, Camillus Heat and Pelican M6 LED would be a perfect partner.

What would you guys recomend for someone who really uses his tools and can lay down quite a beating on things. Thanks.

If you use screwdrivers a lot you could get a SwissTool as the drivers are readily accessed while the pliers are closed. If you use a knife a lot, then a Leatherman Surge or Charge would be a godsend with their one-hand opening knives. For the strongest pliers around, get an SOG PowerLock.

Also, have a look at the Leatherman Core as it features more robust, "professional sized" screwdrivers and a relatively beefier pliers.

I think josekym provided a good analysis.

I EDC a SwissTool Spirit and would recommend that as the best all-around multi-tool you can buy. The SwissTool X is a bit larger and heavier, but I don't think it's any stronger. The Spirit actually has somewhat better ergonomics.

The SOG PowerLock has the best pliers I've found on a multi-tool, but the other implements are adequate, not great.

The Leatherman Charge has by far the best quality of knife blade of any multi-tool, but since you already carry a good tactical I doubt that's the most important issue for you.

The Leatherman Surge is another excellent all-around multi-tool. I prefer the design details on the SwissTools, but that comes down to a matter of personal taste. The one clear advantage of the Surge is if you need the largest tools you can carry.

I'm Partial to my Gerber Sport. Being an EMT my hands are always tied up so the one handed opening is useful. I use it to open O2 Tanks, cut restraints (for those crazies), an general maintance. Not to mention those late night snacks.

I recommend the Leatherman Wave. You can find one for around $50 if you look hard enough. I just got the newer model this year after carrying my old Wave for 5 years.
