makin' my list...the first 3 are pretty much "no brainer's" but I haven't yet determined LENGTH of each...

advice, please....

Chiruwa Ang Khola
Chiruwa M43

WWII OR Fox Folly

So...

the Ang Khola as a regular carry - light copping and self defense
- but what length? 17" is looking balanced...???

the M43 - heavier duty chopping, wit an "uh-uh...no you won't" attitude - maybe a 20" length...???

WWII/Foxy Folly will follow shortly thereafter....the Folly has that nice heavy belly I REALLY appreciate, but in a sweet & nasty way...again, 18 inches...20...???

Others on my list of "must haves" - Bora Dui Chura, Smasher, Bonecutter and Ganga Ram - feel free to express your choice of lengths, what you use 'em for, and why that length might prove ideal for the design...

Thanks MUCH!

If you want to carry it in the woods, stay around 15"

I have a 15" and a 18", and the 18" stays at the camp. 15" is ok to carry.

WWII or foxy folly? I would get something totally different from the AK and get the folly ;)

Heavy chopping, my 18" is ok, but I never tried bigger... yet.

My 15" is a BAS and my 18" a Ganga Ram. There is still a Chiruwa Ang Khola on my wishlist.

My only "user" is an 18" M43, and that's about the upper limit for what's comfortable to carry. Being 6'1", I don't mind the length or weight, but others clearly do.

Be advised that the AK and CAK are reputed as "more tool than weapon" (ditto the Bonecutter) while the military models are closer to 50/50. If you're set on possible self-defense applications, keep that in mind.

Will,
The length I've tried to stay with is 18" for the sake of comparison and seems to be a good all round length. I do have the CAK and WWII in 16.5" and a BDC in 15".

Your first choice, the CAK, for light carry I'd stick to the 16.5" model(mine weighs 29oz). It does more than light chopping though. I recently got my friend a Villager 15" CAK(23oz) that would meet these needs. Another consideration would be the Gelbu Special at 18". The GS is an excellent combo of worker and weapon. My 18" GS is 23oz.

The M43 is a good choice for a HD chopper. At 18"(30.5oz) my M43 has a heavier forward feel to it. Check out today's thread "M43 here at last" and consider the traditional rings that thalion got on his. If the CAK is available in 18", I'm sure it would make a fine HD chopper, too. I picked up a Hanuman AK(33.5oz) in a DOTD and was surprised at its neutral feel for its weight and that it had two fullers. It is an excellent chopper. No sandwiched scales on the handle, but it has a big pin through the tang a little down from the bolster. The Ganga Ram Special should make a good HD chopper, too.

The 16.5" WWII(26oz) I picked up is an older khuk and surprisingly had a Chiruwa handle. You could ask Yangdu if they still make this option available since it appears you lean to that handle style. The Foxy's Folly is a beautiful khukuri and all feedback on it is positive.

A little more than 2 cents worth, but hope the info helps.

Just measured the ganga ram. Kukris are measured in a straight line from tip to the centerline of the handle.
Overall Length is 15.5 inches.
Handle 4.25 inches with the bolster add another inch.
Handle circumference: 4 inches on the thinnest part.
Blade overall is 10.5 inches. Of that 7.5 inches of it can be used to chop with.

Specs are similar to the BAS except for its slightly different handling characteristics and the spine design.

The 15 inch BAS in relation to a spared free hanging tree limb. ;)

A light wrist flick and the edge bit in. :)

Also self defense from what? Humans? Bears? And in what environment? [Assuming wooded] And how do you plan on rigging it up to your belt.
Note: The whole rig is around 8 inches in circumference at its narrowest and can get as thick as 10 inches because of the utility pouches built into the scabbard.

There's a certian logic to that, so I understand; it's just not for everyone, so I covered my bases. :)

Forgive me if I missed something, but could someone refresh me on what "HD" means, in this context?

That's almost exactly what I was thinking, except that I didn't know about the chiruwa version. Brawnier than 15", handier than 18", and with a nice, dual-purpose use (Uncle Bill, I understand, recommended it highly), it sounds like a good one for the usage suggested. If one can get that handle option, it very well might be perfect!

Sorry, fellow addicts. Didn't mean to confuse anyone, just trying to type less. (1080 chips per cut?) Thanks Karda and congrats on your new designation as Moderator.

I also have a 20" Sirupati and got my nephew a 13" Villager CAK, so I've covered a few sizes.(Just realized that the BDC is a 14", not 15".) I just decided that 18" was probably the best size for me and would give me a point of reference for comparison since I just got my first khuk in November.

The WWII is by Kumar and must be relatively old since his initials are written as KM. The chiruwa handle has the rings on it and the tang is ground to match the rings. The handle, blade and brass have a lovely patina of age. A very nice khukuri that that was made available for a very good cause.

Nicholas, have you found a picture of a Sisneyri for the Missing Catalog project. I just read about it and it is an unfamiliar style to me.

Okay, here's one that I found on Powell's page. It's apparently a BirGhorka product, so i suppose we can show it here:

Did wolf mention how tall he is?

We seem to have a base ratio of 15" of khuk to about 5'9" of height, adding an inch in length to anything beyond that. E.g. at 6 feet and half an inch, without shoes (or about 3.5" over standard), I get an 18.5" khuk (about 3.5 over standard). Does this sound right to anybody, or am I up too late?

Depends on how the khukuri is rigged up. The longer blades can be worn on a shoulder sling or just looped to the back of a backpack. 15 inches is about the most that's comfortable to hang off of one's belt? At least for me... But then I am 5'3 :p Anything longer would have to be back slung diagonally...

I'm 5'10" and my primary woods blade is a 20" CAK.

Use a baldric to hang it off your shoulder and you can carry just about any size you want.

I carry my M-43 (19" and around 2lbs) on an old leather tool belt around my waist with no problems. I don't wear things on the belt that holds my pants up cause I'm a scrawny little bugger and don't want things tugging my britches down in the woods. No sense tempting the bears and boars any more than necessary.
