Greetings,

I'm a total newbie on this subject! But I can't seem to keep away for this forum or the Khukuri's different shape....

I've read articles on the HI Site and I think I'm ready to take the dive into Khukuri land!!!

I love to have some advice on purchasing my first Khukuri!

I'm think I'm looking for the middle of the road model:

Light Wieght, Managable Length, Good for EDC tasks.....

Can anybody offer some suggestions?

Thanks,

Brian

bmstrong-- It sounds like you are describing the BAS. A 15"AK would also be a good choice. For something a bit larger, the 16.5" WWII model is excellent. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the HI khukuris. Be warned, though, you are just fooling yourself if you think you will buy only one:) .

Welcome Bmstrong! Like Josh said, the 15" AK (Ang Khola), BAS (British Army Service), and 16.5" WWII model make great first (2nd, 3rd and so on:)) khukuris. Order one, or all three, you won't be disapointed.

Just remember to read the safety thread. Or you might end up like me:eek::o:o (Uncle bill has pics that he should be posting soon.):eek:

My first was an 18" WWII and I love it. But I don't carry mine farther than the back yard. It's a heck of a chopper, though. I've also heard someone recommend a 15" or an 18" sirupati as a good starter. I've got a 25" on the way:D Probably a bit much to carry. Just don't fall for the M43;)
It's hard to go wrong. Welcome aboard and enjoy.

and watch like a hawk, and jump on the first one that appears.

Merry Christmas, Brendan, Im2.

All good recommendations. Also, you might try the 12 or 15" Gelbu Special. Lighter than the AKs and BASs, definitely the choice if you want a blade with light weight and attractive fullers.

Welcome. Listen to the voices of experience, not me.

But I have this nice kothimoda......

HEe hee hee hee!:D Kothimodas are to ritsy for me. I'd prefer a less expencive girl, preferably a brunette with nice curves and deep blue eyes.... I mean plain Jane Sirupati or Chiruwa Style WWII.:D;)

I'm no khukuri or fire expert, but I sure do know how to burn and cut my self real good.:o:p he he he

Welcome to the Physco Ward that everyone thinks is the Star War's Cantina.;)

Get the khuk that you like the looks of the best as they are all good and you will soon get another anyway.
Easiest way to do it without any angst.:D

Hang a 12" AK on your belt, stick an 18" AK in your ruck or your truck. If you run into something that team won't handle, drop me a line, I'd like to hear about it.

edited to add: Welcome to the Cantina, there's guys on here you may never meet in person, but you'll come to trust 'em and respect 'em more than a lot of folks you meet nowadays. All friends here. These are the kind of guys who will tell you if you got a booger hanging from your nose, and not make a big deal about it. Well, except maybe Bruise, he could make a stone statue crack up, but he doesn't mean any harm by his humor.

I'm trying to get banned, but it's not working.

My all time favorite is the BAS. Not too long, not too small and relatively inexpensive. A fine choice for a good khuk. The BAS wasn't the first one I got though. :D So, don't listen to me.

Welcome to the Cantina and hope you enjoy it as much as the rest of us.

If you are going to use your khuk for camping duties, I don't think you would be wise to go smaller than the BAS. If you are going to be doing a lot of walking you don't want a khuk much heavier either. Size of the man and what kind of shape you are in makes another factor to help in the chooseing. Some of the bigger gents on this forum like the big and heavy khuks. Someone already mentioned the 15" AK and the 16.5" WWII. They are both good ones and you won't find yourself under equiped. If you want to know from the expert, tell Uncle Bill what you plan for the Khuk and I bet he gives you just what will handle your needs. He did it for my first one and I have never been sorry that I got the 15" AK.

The Gents on this forum appear to be a special breed of cat. They will tell you how it is and will always try to steer you in the right direction. Again Welcome and have a good time here.:) :)

Welcome to the Cantina! However, let me warn you. The more time you spend in the forum the more Khuks you'll buy. The more Khuks you buy the more time you'll spend in the forum asking questions and compairing blades and devising more and more far fetched reasons to buy more knives ("well i really could use a Kobra in my truck in case i forget my AK at the house and lend my WWII to my dad"). it's a vicious cycle for sure;) I'm living proof. 3 months into this and i now have 2 Khuks and am planning for my third. This coming from college kid that can't even aford tuna and crackers (mmmmm walmart spam and day-old-store bread). But seriously, you couldn't have stumbled upon a greater group of gentlemen to share your khukri passion with. MY first Khuk was at BirGorkha 15" Villager. excellent fit, plain-jane but functional finish, sharpens easily and i have yet to have found a job that she couldn't do with flying colors. Once again, welcome and enjoy the consuming madness;)

WELCOME to the Cantina!

I gave my youngest son, small in stature, about 5'6" a BAS for his backpacking/camping needs
My oldest son, much bigger, a WWII 16.5 "

My two grandsons, about 5'7' and growing, each a BAS

Both sons are getting a Garud for Christmas and my youngest grandson a carved handle Tarwar for his birthday, the day after Christmas. He is into collecting swords and his so far are reproductions, not the real thing!

I spent some time reading the forums and Khukuri descriptions, trying to match their size and interests with the appropriate Khukuri. Not an easy task.

No matter which one you choose it will grow on you. Personally, I prefer the WWII, BAS or 15" AK, as they seem to fit my hand better, although some of my bigger ones do a fine job, just have to be more careful in my grip.

Just my opinion.

Well, I don't know where the smilies went? Supposed to be right after opinion. 'puters' do strange things sometimes

:) :)

Welcome aboard, the BAS is a can't miss, does it all in a small package choice. Don't worry though, it will only be your first. Others are sure to follow.

I don't think you can go wrong with a 15" AK for your first one. My first 2 were 15" and 18" AK's and I am very happy with my first choices. Then I got a 20" AK and a Silver mounted engraved AK so I have 4 now. :D

But I am 5'10" 190 LBS and I have big hands so the bigger handles like on the 18" and 20" AK's fit my hand better. But I really like the balance of the 15" AK, it just sits in you hand and is not too heavy for most people.

But then there is the BAS and the WW11 also that would be great choices for a first one.

Welcome!
As you can see everyone has a favorite Khukuri. For my 2 cents, a BAS is an excellent place to start (This was my first). They're large enough to handle most, if not all, camp chores. A 15" AK is another good starter and the differences are very slight, mainly a little different blade design. I would highly recommend either.
If it gets too hard too deside give Uncle Bill a call, he'll give you the straight dope, with no B.S..
Mike

Just wait for a blem to come up. Buy that. ;)

Seriously - if your hands are smallish or weight is an issue go for a BAS. My Sher BAS is standard hiking fare, but the handle is a little short. It takes some practice to use it comfortably.

Otherwise, go for an AK, Chiruwa AK, or WWII. A little bit bigger. Perfect to fall in love with.
