Hey guys

Which Endura for an LEO. A part-serrated VG10 Endura 4 or a plain-edge ZDP-189 Endura 4?

Which steel/bladetype would be better for his line of work?

Got both knives and i wanna give one of them as a gift. I know the ZDP is a pain to sharpen but my friend has a sharpmaker and knows how to use it. I dont think he has the diamond rods though. Will the medium and fine stones be insufficent for touching the ZDP up?

Any inout would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The CE VG-10 might come in handy if he has to cut webbed seatbelts to get someone out of a crashed auto.

I love my waved fully serrated Endura. I carry it in my left front pocket. I would definitely recommend the waved Endura just for the speed of deployment.

Come on guys, this isn't hard. Read the original post. The OP already has these two knives and wants to decide which to give to his friend the LEO. He doesn't want to go out and buy new knives.

How good is he with his sharpmaker? I would think the sharpmaker would be sufficient to touch up ZDP, as long as you warn he not to let it get dull. ZDP enduras are pretty tough too, as so lo's test showed so it should be able to take a beating. I would give him the ZDP endura, but I'm not a LEO so I wouldn't know how often those part serrations might come in handy.

While ZDP is a great steel I think the VG-10 would be a lot easier for your friend to keep up on. VG-10 is also more forgiving to abuse.

I agree with the above posters, if he'd really into the knives, give him the ZDP, if not then VG10.

I haven't had the opportunity to own a ZDP knife. I have one of the original Gin-1 Enduras and used it on duty. I like VG-10. Easy to use, holds an edge, easy to maintain. I've used the VG-10 for years, so it gets my vote. I think he'll be happy with both.

I am sure he will be happy with either one, but I would go with the ZDP189. It cuts like a light sabre and for a long ass time. Just don't let it get dull, strop it once a month or so and you won't need your friend with a "sharpmaker and knows how to use it" Just my .02

Sorry, I just read that the vg10 is part serated. That makes it interesting. Most people I think only want plain edge and don't care for serrated edges, but I like them and sometimes you need it.

I think VG-10 Endura is better. It will be a tougher blade and I think LEOs would have more of a need to pry things than normal users.

Thanks everybody for taking the time to post. Im going to wrap up the ZDP and present him with that one. He's a knife-guy like the rest of us so i think he'll appreciate the high-end steel.

I carry a SE model everyday on duty. It's almost a must. We use knives hard. Break them and lose them. The SE holds up a little better. Just my experience. Tell him to stay safe.
