Got a friend who makes small knives out of wood and acrylic. Idea is for them to be lightweight and easily concealed to carry with you legally for self-defense (maybe more for women in city setting?) OR just as collectors as he makes them out of many types of wood. He doesn’t do anything online and his kids aren’t interested in his hobby so I’m toying with the idea of getting him started. But I’d like thoughts/advice about if there might be a market for them first. Any and all input welcome!

You will need a gold membership to sell knives on bladeforums.....
I Haven't done it yet, but it's well know here, that it's required.

You will be asked to remove the selling part of this post, I bet pretty quickly......otherwise sorta cool as a novelty, I like them.

You might want to rethink this whole idea. Yeah its cool and all but in many places concealable weapons that are made to defeat metal detectors are not only illegal to possess but also manufacture. So, unless these have some sort of metallic parts embedded in them they are totally illegal to take into a setting where you need to pass through a detector, ie airport, courthouse etc or otherwise be subjected to a search. Get caught and you'll be arrested not only for the concealed weapons violation but also for carrying an illegal weapon. They are also considered double edged stilettos (additional charges) and push daggers (more additional charges)......

I wasn’t try to sell them...I don’t even have them to sell. Just trying to get thought on if there even would be a market.

1. Welcome to Bladeforums. I hope your stay here will be a long one.

2. Your first post looks a lot like an attempt at free advertising, which is frowned upon here (hence my concern regarding the length of your stay).

3. As Arathol mentioned, there are places in the US where it is HIGHLY illegal to manufacture and/or possess "knives" that are defined as "undetectable". If a person were to get caught with one of those, or making them, in such a place, they could very easily find themselves in jail, or prison, where they also have "undetectable" stabbing weapons, like sharpened toothbrushes.

I hope your friend, and his customers are staying on the right side of the law.

Hmmm, yeah. The purpose isn’t to avoid metal detectors at all. My understanding is the wood is just artistic. I hadn’t even considered what you say about double-edged stilletos and push-daggers. Thank you! I’m starting to think I should leave it alone.

Thanks, yeah, I didn’t know anything about the categories they’d fall under and that makes me think I’ll stay away.

Not meant to advertise at all, but I’m not sure how to avoid that look. I really just wanted the advice ya’ll are giving me.

Is it better now without his prices listed? I truly had no intention of selling or advertising for him. I just wanted access to people who know about this stuff to help with advice and thoughts.

Is it just plain illegal to sell anything like this then? That’s be the last thing I want to get involved with for sure.

I don't think there is going to be that big of a market for something like this. It's still going to be considered a concealed weapon, but it's not even useful for cutting tasks that actual knives can perform.

Check the laws where you live. In some places these may be fine, others not at all...depends on how you go about selling them also. It might be fine to make and sell locally where you are but illegal to send somewhere else....best bet is do your homework as to what you are allowed to do and what you aren't.

For conversation sake.....This is new to me, although I haven't really looked into it....what about flint (stone) knives?
or primitive bone? I have a Maui fish hook necklace. It is Sharp could be mistaken.
.... I think this is why we have court rooms? lol

Also what about all the various gadgets that Cold Steel makes and promotes....are they steel embedded? I did not ever hear that?

That’s a good thought, thanks. Perhaps it’s more of a “craft” or collectible. Etsy perhaps?

Take a look at this fairly recent New York statute for example.....

§ 265.10 Manufacture, transport, disposition and defacement of weapons

and dangerous instruments and appliances.

1. Any person who manufactures or causes to be manufactured any machine-gun, assault weapon, large capacity ammunition feeding device or disguised gun is guilty of a class D felony. Any person who manufactures or causes to be manufactured any rapid-fire modification device is guilty of a class E felony. Any person who manufactures or causes to be manufactured any switchblade knife, pilum ballistic knife, metal knuckle knife, undetectable knife, billy, blackjack, bludgeon, plastic knuckles, metal knuckles, Kung Fu star, chuka stick, sandbag, sandclub or slungshot is guilty of a class A misdemeanor.

2. Any person who transports or ships any machine-gun, firearm silencer, assault weapon or large capacity ammunition feeding device or disguised gun, or who transports or ships as merchandise five or more firearms, is guilty of a class D felony. Any person who transports or ships any rapid-fire modification device is guilty of a class E felony. Any person who transports or ships as merchandise any firearm other than an assault weapon, switchblade knife, pilum ballistic knife, undetectable knife, billy, blackjack, bludgeon, plastic knuckles, metal knuckles, Kung Fu star, chuka stick, sandbag or slungshot is guilty of a class A misdemeanor.

The definition of "undetectable knife" from 265.00

5-d. "Undetectable knife" means any knife or other instrument, which does not utilize materials that are detectable by a metal detector or magnetometer when set at a standard calibration, that is capable of ready use as a stabbing or cutting weapon and was commercially manufactured to be used as a weapon.

Cold Steel would be in violation of this statute if they were in NY, and its illegal for them to ship such items there. Technically a flint knife or a letter opener could fall into this category if you got caught trying to go through a metal detector with one. This is why its good to check the laws where you live before you get arrested.....
