advice on hilt

I have a 15 in bowie knife I'd like to use as a throwing knife and camp or trail knife. I plan on useing some cheap hard woods for the handle untill I know I'm not going to keep breaking them. my question is what is a good method of putting the hilt on in a way that it can take a beating and still be big enough to protect my hand. I have a 1/4 X 1 X 2 3/4 peice of brass I'll be using. I just know, no matter how snug the wood and hilt is, after a few throws it'll become loose. I'm trying ot avoid this, any advice?

I don't know of anyone who ever threw a real bowie knife. Crocadile Dundee did it with the cheap chinese POS in the movie. Once you throw the bowie, you don't have it any more. The bowie was made as a fighter. Throwing knives generally don't have guards (hilts are on swords) and just a cord wrapped handle at most.

Sure, make a hilt that looks like a "T" from the side such that there's a hilt and built-in bolster with it, if you can. Then just screw the bolster part right into the tang, or pin it with strong expoxy. It won't come loose at all.

there was a maker I think talked about here back some time ago and he threw his bowies many times before he sold them, a well known maker too I believe, but I can't remember who he was or is.?
Dave Larsen I think was saying something about it??? if I'm not wrong..

for some one just starting out, where is a good place to look for raw materials like a hunk of brass to make this. also, on a poor mans budget and limited tools how could I best make a knife? I used to know some people at the GM plant that would get me scraps. then I'd set to work with a grinder. I'd really like to make better knives. I'd say the best I've made thus far is a hunter out of a file. and a kurka out of some scrap armour plating while in Iraq. I gave both to freinds in the hope of making better ones for my self.
thanks in advance for any input.
