Advice on horse stall mat

Hi everyone. I have a sword I'd like to put horse stall mat scales on. The sword is full tang, with a 14" handle, and I am curious where I can buy an appropriately sized piece (or two) of this material. I also would like to know what the best grinding/sanding material would be for shaping them.

Use new/fresh/sharp, very coarse(36 grit) belts on a belt sander/grinder to shape and then 60 grit-120 grit to smooth out.
