So, I have a few blades that I have ground out of 0170-6C. It's stuff that was from the Camillus going-out-of-business sale. I ship my stuff out to Brad Stallsmith at Peters Heat Treatment and have always had wonderful experiences with them. We've basically been treating it like 1095, but give it a longer soak because of the additional alloy. Results have been good -- but, I know that there's a hell of a lot of knowledge on these forums, and I was curious whether anyone else was working with this material, and what you guys were doing with it? Any home-recipes for working with this stuff? Any recommendations for how to treat it if the final aim hardness is ~62-63? (These are probably going to be personal knives for me.)
Ps. They're chisel ground traditional tantos with between 6 and 8 inches of blade. Stock is 3/16th thick. One is convex ground with 4 inches of (to-be) sharpened swedge. The other is hollow ground. Both will have a slightly concave back; if you guys have suggestions on whether I should grind the concave back before or after HT I am interested to hear suggestions (in the past I have ground the back before HT). Previously I have had Brad do a traditional clay tempering on these guys. Hamons never really showed in my experience. Don't care one way or another about aesthetic qualities of my user knives, though. All things being equal I just figure I'll get him to do a mono-temper on them, and draw the tangs back a bit.
