Hi guys, I'm new to this website and I was hoping you could give me some advice on buying a knife.

I want to get a knife for my father for his birthday but im not sure which brand go with. Im looking for a simple "bowie" style hunting knife, single edged, full tang, about 10 inches. I want to get him something thats good quailty and that will last. Between $50 and $150 bucks.

Have been looking at Buck, Cold Steel and Muela but not sure which is the best.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Something along these lines....

You can't go wrong with a classic Ka Bar.

Beckers also have a good following here because they are relatively inexpensive yet are can take a good beating. BK 17 is the bowie style model.

Esee's are also a solid knife with one of the best warranties in the business. You break it they will send you a new one. However, the style is perhaps a little different than what you are looking for. Good luck with your search.

That Muela that you have linked is one beautiful knife I must say. Don't know anything else about it but it gets an A+ in the looks department.

Kabar, Cold Steel, Becker, And many more. The classic Kabar or BK17 would be great. I would recommend the Cold Steel Trailmaster. On Amazon for 135$

i recommend CS Trailmaster too. it is classy (at least for me). but thought you should be careful, there are a ton of it's counterfeits.

Do you expect that he will actually use the knife for hunting or woodscraft. Or do you just want to get him a really cool Bowie knife??

The Buck 119 is a classic knife and a good choice. There are numerous choices that are all good. However, if I was your father, I would be very happy with the Buck 119 Special in your link.

The Buck 119 is 420HC. there are at least a dozen knives with better steel than the Buck , under 75 bucks.

Rock Creek Oryx isn't a classic bowie design, but it's affordable, high quality and quite elegant. Can be found for under $90. Another, more modern, offering would be the SOG Tech-Bowie. It'll run you right around $100 and, IMO, has a good mix of classic lines and modern design. SOG has some issues with quite a few of their folders, but they can make a nice fixed blade.

The Buck and Muela knives are both great choices for a nice useful size bowie with style to boot. The others suggested start to look tactical. I assume by your choices you don't want tactical. Not a ton of Muela talk around here, but I have 2 and they are handsome, well made, and very capable knives. I'd go with the Muela from the 2, but that's mostly because of the style. The Buck 119 Special is a legendary blade, and don't worry too much about the naysayers about the Buck steel choice. Buck has perfected 420hc.

All good advice here! Can't go wrong with an ESEE though!

ESEE 6 all the way. I've beat on mine for almost a year now on countless hunting, camping and hiking trips. I got mine for around $120 I believe.
