Advice on Knife lubricatioin

I've been looking around for specific information on lubrication techniques because after I lube my pivot the lube will leak onto the lock bar and cause it to start sticking. Is this my imagination? It also seems like the lock bar will move farther over because of the lube and then wear faster.. I certainly don't want to do more harm than good, I'm just trying to maintain my blades.
Can anyone offer up a better way to do this?

I usually take the knife apart and use a VERY light coating around the pivot and bearings or washers or whatever. I've never noticed it getting onto the lock bar because I don't use enough for it to drip or anything like that. Pus, if you use a lot of lubricant it usually ends up attracting dust/lint/dirt and will hurt more than help. The lock bar moving farther over makes sense to me, but I don't think it would cause it to wear any faster.

I have recently moved very close to salt water and found that my blades needed constant lubrication and salt protection. I used to use machine oil but it does not have the same qualities it did whilst i was inland. The humidity added to the issue making everything coated in salt water film even when in a wardrobe draw! I have found that a 50/50 mix of fishing reel grease (which i have for the constant fishing i do) and machine oil works a treat at creating not only lubrication but a barrier from salt and humidity. The mixing of the oil and grease also stops the oil from leaking over handle scales and actuation on folding knives.

I think the safest thing to use is Tuf Glide... it serves a dual purpose of protectant and lubricant, although it's more of a protectant than lube, but since it's made up of mineral spirits it dries quickly and doesn't attract dust and dirt the same way other lubricants do.

I've heard good things as far as lubricant only about Daiwa (sp?) reel oil if you're really trying to loosen up the action, but since I like to keep my detent fairly tight, I've never tried it myself.

Then the next part of the conversation turns into what's food safe depending on what you use your blades for- and while I've read about a few alternatives, mineral oil is the only thing I'd trust in that circumstance- but you lose out on any real protection.
