I would like advice on a good knife company to get a knife from I am getting 2 next generation tomahawks from ATC and was wanting to know What knife company made a good everyday using working camp knife to be used for cutting skinning and anything that comes up that would be comparable quality to ATC tomahawks .I had previously used cold steel knives but if the ATC tomahawks are obviously superior to Cold Steel tomahawks then what knife company would make a suitable knife that would be superior to cold steel. I dont want to start trouble or anything I just wanted to know ideas from someone who has used knives hard and continuously and had to depend on them daily I know there are many readers here that do depend on their knives Any ideas will be appreciated.

I might be a little biased but I think you really can't go wrong with anything from Busse Combat or Swamp Rat Knife Works both have forums on this board. Justin at Ranger knives also is making some really tough knives, but I feel they are more "combat" then "field" in design.

The previous suggestions are all excellent, but also kind of expensive. If you want a good solid knife at a lower price point, take a look at the Becker (BK&T) line from Camillus. They are are practical, hard-working knives and a lot of them can be had for under $50.

It pays to remember the CS "vietnam tomahawk" was and is merely an inexpensive emulation of the LaGana VN Tomahawk whose legacy is continued by Andy Prisco at ATC.

CS began making the Taiwan produced 'hawks after Pete LaGana declined to sell or license CS regarding the original ATC design. So, CS just went to Taiwan and began importing their version of the item.

On the other hand CS knives - in anything other than the Taiwan 420 steel they are now using for their inexpensive lines and models - are quite good. I have always liked and have used the Master Hunter with great results, for example.

Becker is producing a wonderful line of camp and field blades as noted in the earlier post. Very hard to go wrong with a Becker product from both design, materials, and pricing.

I would strongly recommend TOPS knives (http://www.topsknives.com ). I have used them hard in remote wilderness on numerous occasions, and they have served me in other hard-use scenarios as well. They have many designs which would work quite well as all-around camp knives.

Best,

Brian.

Thanks, Brian -

Overlooked TOPS - my bad.

Have a Hunter/Tracker on order with Mike (Fuller).

Have worked with several of their models and agree with you 100%.

I have been using Ka-bars since i was 14 for many different things and put them threw a lot of abuse. I even throw them on ocasion (by the blade, with a dulled back cut). i would love to get my hands on a customs bowie, or a tops knife but they just don't fit into my budget.

All of the above mentioned knives are good ideas backed with good reason. I would just want to mention Mercworx Knives. The are expensive yes, but I have had the ability to play with a variety of knives and for me, the Equatorian in the CMP-S30V is the be all end all to go with my ATC Hawks (esp. the Next Gen). But yes they are expensive but you quality wise...WOW! Mercworx makes a variety of knives for a variety of uses which I have seen up close. The Equatorian is pretty much a short sword to must but I chose that one because I'm a pretty big guy. The Sniper may be a little more practical size wise for most. Anyway, check 'em out on line or at a show if you can. Very very nice blades.

I have a Busse Battle Mistress, which is awesome; it’s like you can’t damage it. My brother has some Fehrman knives that he loves. And I think the ultimate camp knife might have to be a khukri (for chopping anyway; my brother has a 16” one that way out chops my Battle Mistress; he used to have an 18” one, that thing chopped!). You may want to look into getting a Himalayan Imports khukri.

All these guys are corect.
All these companies make great knives!
The question is your budget.
Moyra kiks
Opinel Kiks
HI Khuks Kiks
Swiss Army Kiks
Merc Works Kiks!
So does Swamp Rat!
The basic USMC KayBar also kiks.
By the way so does Loveless and Randall.
Scagel used to kik...but if you use one...U'll be kiked:p

Just find a decent maker that fits inside your budget that has the blade profile you think fits for you.

No one here can tell you the *best* blade. Cuz if it was out there well we would all own it.

Just play and have fun.
