Title says it all. Im looking for a lightweight waterproof bag to replace the one I currently have. I believe it is what was a vietnam era standard issue . . . that sorta thing. I got it from my local surplus store. It is very waterproof, very sturdy, and very heavy (at least for being simply a bag). It probably weighs 1/2 to 1 pound and rolls up to a minimum cylindrical size of 6" x 2.5". Also the only way to close it is to twist the top a bunch and tie the string around it as tight as I can. It comes in very handy when crossing a river, I just throw my clothes, boots and bag in and swim across. So ideally Im looking for something that weighs less than 5oz and has better way to seal. all my contents combined are probably about 24" tall, 12" wide and 12" deep. So basically a bag that will close while holding an object of that size. Any info is greatly appreciated.

I'm thinking the Dry Peak Bagger by Outdoor Research.

3-mil contractor bag.

They tend to be larger than your stated criteria, but meet the other criteria perfectly. Also, they're reasonably inexpensive and will accommodate any "expansion" in your needs.

If you feel like spending money, there's the Seal Line ILBE... marine-issue dry sack that is supposedly really good. I don't have one of my own, though. And they are expensive.

The regular Seal Line bags are inexpensive, heavy duty and not too heavy. I have two of their Baja bags in 40 liter size for canoeing. To seal, roll down the top and snap the buckle. These in this size cost about $30 retail. Several other sizes are available. By the way, mine weigh about a pound and a half each. If you go lighter, you get far less durable bags. 20-ounce vinyl sides and 34-ounce bottom.

Thanks very much for the info and the quick replies. Im going with the Seal Line ILBE 56 liter model. Perfect. I also really like the olive green on the outside but turn it inside out and its bright orange . . . just in case

Let us know how you like it. I've wanted to try one for a while, but the cost has kept me from jumping in so far.

I like the sea to summit waterproof bags to keep my delicates dry in my backpack and daypacks. They're cheap.

I've used Sea to Summit and Outdoor Products for hiking/backpacking/motorcycling. No leakage, but haven't been in a heavy long-term downpour with either brand.
