Hello guys!

I'm continuing my month long quest for a perfect first (EDC, light duty) knife and just today I saw a video of Benchmade 908-161 and immediatelly had to include it in my wish-list. Other knives in my wish-list use the best steel available today (S90V, 204P, M390) and I was wondering how would odinheim damasteel compare to them?

I really want to get the best quality for my money and having watched and read enourmous amount of material on edge sharpness and retention I came to value quality steel a lot more. Would I be significantly sacrificing this quality for pretty pattern if I decide to buy 908-161?

Thank you,
RV

Somebody might have something more specific but this right from Benchmades catalog this year.

Benchmade refers to the edge retention at on par with 440C, which is good info (taken from above). And many people praise BM 440C. Appears to be quite tough as well.

I like my 440c sharpens quick on the Lansky and keeps an edge planty long enough. So if this Damascus is anything at all like my 440c it'll be great for an "(EDC, light duty) knife"

440C is good stuff, and used to be an all round favorite. I have an old Ascent that takes a beating between sharpenings, and it really is easy to get an edge back, if not by simply stropping.

Damasteel (the company) uses two steels in their Damasteel (the actual steel).

RWL-34 and PC 27 (a powdered version of 12c27).

You can expect edge retention in the category of RWL-34/CPM154. Properly heat treated and good geometry I prefer RWL-34 to most steels. Polishes well, does not chip easily.
