Advice on proposed trade: BK2+BK17 for BK4 (Camillus)+Spyderco Delica

I recently posted a couple knives for sale on my local sales listings and was contacted by a gentleman in another state who was interested in doing some trading. He just happened to have 2 blades I am very interested in; The BK4 Camillus version and a Spyderco Delica. I feel like this is a great trade for me, but I am hesitant because he lives in another state and there's a great leap of faith; he could send me a box of used $2.00 kitchen knives for all I know. Any advice on the safest way to go about doing this?

I've attached a picture he sent of the BK4, the edge has been convexed. I am pretty excited about the 1/4" Camillus version. To those who know more than me about blade geometry, does the convex look like it was decently made?

I often do sales and trades with people on forums and have never been burned. If this person has a high post count and has been on the forums a long time they are probably legit. You also have a decent case for mail fraud if they rip you off and it is a federal crime. Under the circumstances you shared, I would go ahead and do the deal, I suggest you both agree to ship the blades using something with status tracking ( and insurance!) like UPS.

Try to do a History on his screen name... as Iggy said, CYA, Tracking & Insurance. There's always the chance of getting burned, when dealing with those not local. I've bought stuff from plenty of folks from other states, so far so good. What's your intuition telling you, that's your best test. Good Luck!

I'd want to know what the back side of the blade looks like, too. The grind looks a bit funky to me, but the pictures kind of suck, too. Honestly, if you want a BK4, just sell the others and get a nice new / near new one. KaBar 1095 is hard to beat in a working knife.

Also, truthfully I am sure with your low post count and recent sign-up date, he is probably more worried about getting screwed over than you are---lol----If he has more posts, a good feedback score and has been around awhile, he will probably ask you to ship first.

To be honest I'm not even sure that's a real BK-4...The real ones are ground much higher than that and I can't see any stamp on the blade.

I take it this was not a forum trade deal as you sated local and also do not have the membership level to sale here.

In which case, if he proposed the trade have him send the knives 1st.

I don't know what to tell you.

I've done trade here through the forums with another member here when we were both relatively new and it went wonderfully. Not everyone is evil.

People may look at the fact that I only have 1 feedback and get sketched out but that feedback attest to my honesty and doesn't mean that I'm not trustworthy just cos' I dont trade knives weekly tiger high numbers.

Anyway, this trade has nothing to do withthe forums guys, trust your gut, just do it if you want it.

But what good is insurance if your package arrives at the location? It's not to protect you from getting burned, it's to protect package loss.

Thanks for the info guys. I ended up doing the trade. He was very legit and communicated throughout the process, we sent eachother pics of the knives being packages and sent out, and then exchanged tracking info and pictures of the receipts. Plus I have done a lot of dealings with gun/knife people over the years (in person) and from my experience I have always encountered like-minded individuals who aren't trying to rip you off, they are just trying to trade off gear they are bored with and get their hands on something new to play with.

As for the BK4, that is a Camillus version and has been convexed, which is why is may look funny. I really wanted to get my hands on a Camillus version because they are much heavier than the Kbar versions and made out of 1/4" stock vs 3/16". Plus its just kind of cool to get a knife that isn't made anymore. Our packages are supposed to arrive at eachothers houses on Friday, so I will post some pics once I receive it.

It is my understanding that they are not .250" thick but closer to .200". Just an FYI in case you were a bit surprised when it arrived.

Thanks for the info. I have heard that the Camillus ones were advertised as .250" but were actually around .210" or so.

I am actually getting a little worried. I found some pics of Camillus BK4's and the grind toward the handle seems to go up almost to the spine, much higher than what this one looks like from the pics. I also don't see any roll stamping.....I'm going to be pretty upset if this isn't a real BK4
