Advice on removing stains from blade??

I was wondering if anyone knew how to get plant stains off a Khukuri blade (20"AK), or is this just the way Khuks look after use. The stains came right after cutting sugar cane and I tried to polish them off with a clean rag, and that didn't work. I even tried soap and water to no avail. Next I tried WD 40, as I know it often removes surface rust from things--no dice! I know the khukuri is a work-blade and will show some wear and tear, but I was curious if the
staining I'm seeing is normal? The stains look just like the "bluing" that motorcycle exhaust pipes get. Any advice you folks have would be greatly appreciated as always.

Happy New Year and thanks!

Rob, Either Flitz or Simichrome polish should remove those stains. Use as directed on the tube. Oh, and watch that edge!

I have no experience with the Tuff cloth products. My understanding is that they are rust/corrosion preventatives. I have been using a silicone spray lube, similar to that "discovered" by Yvsa, for corrosion prevention.
I have used Simichrome polish a good deal for
general metal polishing...it will remove various oxides from metal surfaces without abrasion.
If I were going to clean up a khukri, I would start with hot soapy water, rinse, and dry.
If there were stains, I would remove them with Simichrome, then coat the blade with silicone spray before re-sheathing. I think a lot of us don't bother with stain removal/polishing on our "users." Stains (not rust) will give the blade character.

Thanks very much for the advice. I'll try those out and see what happens. I don't mind if my 20"AK gets used looking, but its nice to be able to clean it up once in awhile too! Its really great to be able to get expert advice on my khukuri when I need it--thanks again!

Happy New Year to all!

Hi Clay.
Yes,it's the Scotch Brite pads that come in different degrees of abrasion.
The red ones leave a nice soft satin finish that really looks nice on a using khukuri!!
The green ones are okay with a slightly more scratched finish and not real soft looking.
I learned to use them from the top or sideways going toward the edge after I dulled my 18"AK with one of them.
When they are used toward the edge and past,it seems to help maintain the edge instead of dulling.

The Flitz or Simichrome will take the stain off well.I have only used the Flitz. This is one time that you DON'T Want To Follow tthe Directions!!
My instructions said to use the Flitz with steel wool and I scratched the factory finish on the blade. This was on one of the new Marbles 52100 steel bladed knifes.
Doesn't matter now, because it is stained to a marbled effect and will stay that way.It looks worse than the 50 + year old one I have.

When used with a soft cloth it maintains the mirror finish without scratching.

Khukuri FAQ

Regarding the copper penny trick, they used to make copper puffs ( thin copper wire or thick copper wool ) for dishwashing/ scrubbing pots and pans. Doubt they would work well on rust, but ought to take off sap and other crud. Also reputed to work excellently ( due to copper's high heat absorption ) as packing material in sound suppressors such as on 007's 7.62 PPK

Don't know if you remember, Uncle Bill, but Where Virgina and Kietzke come together there used to be a big billboard that said "Silence the Violence", and they had bumper stickers with the same saying too. I wanted to put one of them on my bumper next to a bumper sticker that said "with Ciener Suppressors".

I've always trusted mothers metal polish. I recently picked up some at Pep Boys, but it was Mothers Mag and Aluminum polish. It works just the same. I've been using my khuk everyday now on various plants and this always takes the stains off.

Mike L.,

Thanks for the advice. I used Flitz on my Khukuri and all the stains came right off. Of course once I saw that I could get stains off so easy, I went out and chopped some more wood....what can I say. I'm finally getting the hang of the big AK, and it doesn't cause hand/arm strain at all. Thanks for all the great advice, and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!
