I just bought 2 sak alox pioneers for xmas gifts. My, the tools are tight! I'd like to break them in before gifting. My hands are old and my nails are brittle so opening and closing won't work for me. Any advise?

You might try flushing them out really well with something like WD40, or even under hot water and dish soap to make sure there’s no dried oil/lube in the joints. Sounds as though the joints just need a good cleaning and re-oiled.

Oil with a light oil, or gun oil. Work the tools back and forth. Type of oil to use is another entire topic of debate. I’ve found just about any type of gun oil, Ballistol, sewing machine oil, etc. to work fine for me. If it’s to be used around food stuffs, mineral oil is non toxic.

SAK’s generally do not have that heavy of a blade pull to be a nail breaker.

What Joe said, but I've had a couple Alox that were pretty snappy. I'd use the corner of an old credit card or similar as a starter, or a stiff guitar pick if you had one. One of the great things about Alox is they handle heat, so warm them up, I don't shy away from pouring right from the kettle onto them, resting them for a bit, then going after cleaning them up.
