I just got a 6 blocks of fossil coral from motherofpearl and am getting ready to send it off to K&G to get stabilized. I want to color the coral and I was hoping to get some examples of colors others have done. I'm pretty sure I'm doing some of the block in blue but I'm not sure after that, any advice is appriciated. Oh and I'll be using them for folder scales.

Thanks Tim

If you dye it and then stabilize it won't all the dye color be removed? Did they say they would do it? Frank

If they do the coral the same way they do the wood, it spends up to a couple weeks in the dye tank.
Then they take it out and let it dry, then stabilize it.
With K&G's dyes I have found that the blue, purple and orange seem to be the most vibrant colors.
I have never seen dyed coral but I am guessing since you are starting with stark white it should turn out great.
I am curious if some portions will resist the dye like with wood.
No matter how it turns out I bet it's going to look cool.

Frank, best I can get from looking at pictures and talking to the K&G folks is that a lot of the voids will be colored and the harder coral will stay whiter.

Mark, thanks for your insights on the colors.

Tim

I've used some coral and have to say if you can get it stabilized it will have to be a far easier material to work with than without. Frank
