Hello

I dont know too much about knives other than I wish to buy one for a friend currently within the military. Thus I am here to ask for advice from people that have a good understanding of providers and metal quality. I wish to purchase a fixed blade, eight to ten inch (blade), from a robust metal that can hold its edge and resist against breaking or bending. He will require it to function in the field as a last means of protection (will not be to collect) but I wish to have an aesthetic design incorporated into the product. I was reading that Jack crane makes good knives that look great but after visiting this site and reading the numerous commentary stating he is a thief, I will no longer be purchasing from him. If someone with a significant amount of experience and understanding of product quality and marketplace (custom or distributor) can point me in the right direction for this gift, It would be much appreciated.

What's your budget?
Charlie Edmondson of Edmondson Elite has started a tactical line of knives. They are budget friendly and look very well made. Might give him a shout.

8" to 10" blade is a lot for a military guy to carry. can I ask why you picked this size blade? if it's something he wants.. just a big A$$ blade then that's fine, but if you're choosing it for him to carry and use, I'd suggest something in the more practical range. Bonus on that is there are literally thousands of more choices in the 5-7" blade range to choose from. Huge knives are a nice to have and play with in garrison however over time they generally get left behind more and more often for something lighter and easier to pack on their kit. just my 2c.

American U.S. Forces consider a 8-10" blade as small personal carry.

I bought tickets for blade show. I will try to find the right model during the event. Thank you for everyone's time spent trying to help. A+ for this community.

I picked up a couple from Charlie....his Neck Knife and his Utility/Fighter, great pieces and exceptional values, IMHO.

I do not in any way want to start a war or even really a discussion about blade length and what people carry, however over the past 17 years of combat arms experience, I have seen knives with a 10" blade carried by soldiers maybe a handful of times. of course depending on where they are going or what they are doing people bring parangs, machetes and bolos or kukuris on occasion, but for most "normal" work the average (and above average) soldier generally learns to leave big honking blades home when they go places... it's just a simple matter of space and weight. A lot of people start out wanting something huge because that's what they saw Billy carry in predator or something stupid, but when you're carrying over 70lbs of kit on your person for an average outing, most end up carrying something more sensible, and I've seen way more sog seal pups hanging on people's kit than any other knife (leatherman being the exception). I'm not saying he can't or shouldn't... just giving him my opinion from my experience, that a decent 5" blade well designed knife will be carried a lot more than some huge tree beater and the only good knife will be the one you take with you.
