I want a bowie style knife but (I think) I want a a better steal then the AUS-6 but I'm not sure.

This is my first large fixed blade and I want something for some heavy camp chores. The SOG Tigershark is exactly what I want as far as size and blade shape. The only thing holding me back is the steal. I was hoping for something like the Fallkniven VG10 but I can't stand the look of them.

Anybody have an alternative in mind?

It seems like you want a knife with a guard, correct? Check out Fehrman knives, they have some excellent knives at really good prices. Here is their site: http://www.fehrmanknives.com/knives.htm I would also suggest checking out Ranger knives, as Justin makes fantastic knives, with amazing customer service, AND excellent prices. I own an RD6 myself. Here is his site: http://www.rangerknives.com/Knives/index.html I hope this helps, and are what you are interested in!

wow thats a nice knife. definitely will consider it thought its currently out of my price range. Man I wish Fallkniven just made the Tigershark. they are fantastic as well as under 200 bucks.

I was also considering the knives from Blackjack but once again I don't know anything about the blade steal they use. It just says Cryo blade on New Grahm's web site.

Some insight would be appreciated... =]

I'll second the recommendation of Ranger knives. The RD series is made from 5160 spring steel, which is much tougher than any cutlery stainless that I'm aware of.

They don't look like a SOG Tigershark, but if you're really going to use it for heavy camp chores, that's probably a good thing. The Tigershark's long false edge might not be idealy suited for batoning, the blade doesn't lool like the most effective chopper because there's not enough steel at the front of the blade, and for a heavy camp chores you might be better of with a stronger, less accute tip.

I love my tigershark. I have chopped with it, thrown it like Locke from Lost, and I'm making a trebuchet with it. It keeps a razor sharp edge and has a strong tip. The blade doesn't chip, and it out-cuts all of my knives. If you haven't already bought a knife, I strongly suggest you get a Tigershark!

The Blackjack knives use 1095 that has had the cryo treatment, personally I think 1095 is one of the best carbon steels that can be used for a knife blade. I have owned Blackjack knives in the past and will own them again if I can manage to hang onto to one without a nephew claiming it...lol.

Save yourself a lot of money and buy a 12" Ontario machete. It will take care of most of the camp chores you want a big knife for. I'm really quite taken with this size of machete. You can buy them with or without the hand guard.

I like the older SOG Tigershark knives. I have a couple, but honestly they are a bit big to use for much of anything other than chopping.
