Can anyone advise me the best way to sharpen a CRKT DESERT CRUISER lock knife-AUS8 steel.
I am new to the knife scene and want to start off on the right foot!

Thanks.

Is it a serrated knife? Do you have any equipment already? Do you want a guided system or start off freehand?

Andy....its a non serrated edge, i think i would prefer to start off freehand and learn a technique....just bewildered by all the products available!! Getting a boker plus tactical knife shortly with a big 72 blade...this is 440c so need to be a bit practiced for the future!!

Hmm... no, I guess not. :D I was looking at the low rez pics of the serrated version. Looks like a recurve that way. :o

AUS-8 steel is pretty straightforward stuff (new versions are apparently 8Cr14MoV; but same advice applies). Anything in SiC (silicon carbide) or AlOx (aluminum oxide) would handle it with ease. Norton's Crystolon (SiC) and India (AlOx) stones would be an easy pick, if I were in your shoes. Wet/dry sandpaper would also handle it, in a pinch. Most is SiC, some is AlOx.
