Looking to buy a new multi tasking EDC small fixed blade. As it will be my first fixed blade I was looking for advice before purchasing. The two knives that have caught my eye are the Ka-Bar impact warthog and the Ontario Rat3. I was looking for a Swamp Rat howling rat but it is unavailable at the moment and the Ontario Rat 3 looks to have similar attributes. Any opinions/ideas about these two knives would be much appreciated or indeed any other suggestions would be appreciated

Thanks:thumbup:

Based on what you're already looking at, the Cold Steel Master Hunter (Carbon V) and the Fallkniven F1

The RAT-3 has worked great for me, I've used it hard and it held up very well. It rides very comfortably, I don't like synthetic sheaths but this one is so well thought out I carry it all the time.

Of course, Bark River knives are excellent as well. Take a look at the Mountaineer, I think it might be exactly what you're looking for.

How much can you spend?

I have a Ka-Bar Warthog. It is pretty good but I dislike the guard. I also have a RAT-3. It is good too, but I dislike how the handle feels.

If you can spend around $200, get a small Dozier. IMO, his knives cannot be beat for solid, simple users and at a working man's price.

If you cannot quite afford a Dozier, Bark river is the next best thing (and that is not an insult).

Depending on what you want to spend, here are some very good outdoor knives for the money:

All of the above will have a wait time of at least 6 month and around $175.00 to $225.00+.

You can not go wrong with Bark River or Fallkniven. Many types and sizes to choose from and you can get them immediatly for less:

This is just my opinion, but I would stay away from cold Steel. I ahve owned two and sold them both. Just my 2 cents. Good luck.

I'll second this vote. I have both knives, and really enjoy them both. However, the CS Master Hunter has accompanied me on more trips than the F1. The F1 is a great knife, but the CS MH can handle a broader range of tasks, in my opinion. You can find some decent prices on the CS MH, usually under $50. I don't know if prices have come down on the F1. I bought mine a number of years ago, and it ran me around $90.

Botht he RAT-3 and te Ka-Bar Impact Warthog have intrigued me. Both are quite different in design. Visualize yourself using different knives for what you want them to do. That practice has helped me make a few knife decisions.
