I'm looking at replacing the handle on my chiruwa ang khola, and I just wanted to ask some questions and get some advice before I proceed. First, what will be the best way to remove the horn slabs that are already on it? Will the pins need to be drilled out? Will I have to remove the butt plate or could I just leave it in place? What should I expect to find underneath once I get the handle and bolster off? I want to extend the handle forward about an inch for a better choked up grip, might this cause any dificulties I don't yet see? That's about all the questions I can think of right now, but I'm sure I'll have more before I'm done. Sorry for so many questions, but they're one of the best ways to learn. And since I know it will be brought up, I did try doing searches, but any search with the word handle in it just doesn't seem to want to work for me. I thank you all in advance for the great advice I'm sure I will get.

If you have the time to search, using the keywords "tang" "ratail tang" or such will reveal a few pics of unhandled khuk's. Chiruwa's maybe not. i believe there is a foxy's folly tang pic floating in the forums.

I imagine that there will be some laha epoxy on the handle, heating it up would be the easiest way to disolve it most likely. I am no expert but there are some around here.

I think it would be better if you just cut off your pinky finger yakuza-style.
That way, you get a longer grip and you dont have to mess with laha, which is a b1tch.

You're gonna find that the Chiruwa tang only goes so far and if you want to extend the handle you'll have to fit the slabs to the knife, over the back end of the blade. Should be alright even if it looks a mite funny.;)
Or you could grind down the back of the blade to the tang itself and use the same thickness slab all the way up. However it will be a bitch to get it to fit properly unless you're very careful.
Let us know what you decide and what happens, I for one would like to see it when finished.:D

It might also be worth mentioning that I was planning on making the new handles out of birch. Should this be adequate? Or should I seek out a tougher/harder wood? As usual any suggestions are appreciated.

Well, they make gun stocks out of it, so I personally think it would be fine.
