Hi all,

I'm advising a friend on a knife purchase, and we've been walking through all the options. We've whittled it down to a traditional model, folding, 4" blade or longer (not shorter), price range around $100 but a bit more acceptable. Any suggestions for knives that fit those criteria highly appreciated!

Cheers,

Mag

4" blade is pretty long for a traditional. A folding hunter or a grand daddy Barlow might fit the bill.

Case Folding Hunter or a Case Clasp both come to mind. The Folding Hunter is available in SS or CV. I'm not sure about blade length on either model but they are both about 5 1/4 inches closed.

A.G. Russell makes some good quality large traditional knives as well.

the a g russell large texas ranger has a 4 1/8 inch long blade, and the large folding hunter 4 5/8.
btw, great avatar, puts mine to shame.

To add another input, and drifting a bit away from American traditionals, you might want to consider a Laguiole as well :)

Before I finally accepted that big traditional folders are just not for me, I had a GEC liner lock Pioneer that was quite nice.

The large toothpick patterns would have a blade around 4", as most are between 5 and 5-1/2" closed.
Queen's #20 pattern has the advantage of D2 tool steel for the blade.

Wow, those are fantastic suggestions. You guys know your knives! I'll talk to my friend and maybe send him links to a few pics online. Thank you!

Mag

Schatt and Morgan File and wire Grandaddy barlow, or large clasp knife, or Coke handled knife. would fit the bill (though I would not recommend if you can't handle the knife, or can't fix a gap or two!).

My top recommendation would be anything from GEC. They make a Ben Hogan. Both locking and non locking. Might be just a bit shorter, but I think they are a 4 inch bade.
