I've been trying to avoid making one of these threads, but I've spent about 10 hours the past three days looking for the next kershaw I want. So far it's between the s30v leek, the Damascus leek, or the lahar.
The s30v leek is what i have always wanted, but the damascus leek is limited. I just don't like the steel handle. The Lahar, I like because it's larger than the leek, but I believe the s30v is better steel(correct) and it isn't a ken onion(no ao). This is cutting into my college work, so can someone assist me :D And this is my first post, but I've been lurking these forums for over a year.

No, "buy them all"'s :thumbdn: lol.

Thanks

if your going to use the knife get the s30v leek. the damascus leek if your putting it on a show stand, and the lahar if you need something cheaper to beat the crap out of. all are nice knives but just keep in mind the true purpose of its use and the decision wont be so hard to make.

It really depends on what you want it for.
For the price, the Lahar will get you the most knife. It is large though, so if it is meant to be an EDC make sure that the size won't cause any issues.

This thread has a picture of it next to an older S30V Leek and a Spec/Speed Bump: First impressions of the Lahar.

This should give you an idea of the size.

The S30V Leek will probably be the most practical EDC as a student. Blade maintenance will not be as much of an issue as with the Damascus Leek.

Of course the Damascus Leek will be the rarest of the three (unless the S30V Leek is one of the older really small runs). You can always do like many here have, and buy multiple Leeks and swap the parts until you have a combo you like (search the forum for frankenleeks, there are a bunch scattered around.)

You'll end up getting all three eventually ;), so you might want to get the hardest to get first - Damascus Leek, the Lahar next, then the S30V Leek.

oi, i just got the s30v leek after reading purples post. I didn't see kneedeep's. Well, if the damascus is still available in a few months i'll pick that one up too.
But
Thanks Purple and kneedeep for your help =D
I'll post pictures with my bad digi cam when I get it.

and a quick question: On my delica 4, the vg-10 lost its sharpness rather quickly(it also has a few chips from cutting cardboard)...that and the blade doesn't open smoothly at all. Sticks in the middle(I don't really like spyderco's) Anyway. In general, do knives with vg-10 lose their sharpness quickly I ask this because the lahar has vg 10

no problem sorry if you ended up making too quick a decision on your knife purchase but im sure kneedeep is correct and you will be purchasing all of them.

Don't worry, I don't think you could have made a bad choice.

Much easier to use the Leek [than the Lahar] around non-knife people and you won't be as worried about really using it as you would with the Damascus version.

I love the feeling after ordering a knife. For a stupid piece of metal, it makes me so happy lol.

As a general rule, VG-10 will hold an edge quite well, depending on the profile and the materials cut. Cardboard is one of the hardest things to cut, as it wears an edge quite quickly. A Sharpmaker will give you a good edge fairly quickly.

As for the lack of a smooth opening, try spraying a liberal amount of WD-40 into the pivot area as you open and close the blade, then wash well in hot soapy water and rinse with hot water. When thoughly dry, lubricate with your choice of lube.

P.S. - Welcome to the forum!

I took the knife apart, and there was a bur on the lock. I filed it down, but I took a bit too much. I put a bit of gun oil to lubricate it. It made it smooth to open again, but I tried spine whacking it to see if it still locked sufficiently and it failed. It took a good amount of force to get it to fail, but it doesn't sound the same when It locks after it was filed. I guess I need a new lock.

I've had all three... for an EDC it's the s30V leek. The lahar is just a lot bigger and I really don't like to compare them. S30v is a workhorse steel, and VG10 is more refined in that is takes a much finer edge, with not as much effort. If I were wanting to stop a bear from chewing off my arm, it's the lahar. If I need to open 20 toy boxes at xmas, it's the s30v leek:) Oh, and if I just want a wicked sharp knife that's great for show and tell, and light duty... them it's the damascus leek.
