Hi folks!
I am a hunter from Bulgaria - country in eastern part of European union.
I have kukri from Nepal and very litle experience who make me to be happy with him, BUT wish to have and another!
I hear that Himalaya Import makes real hand made kukri, and are No1.
I need real tough kukri with good edge retention for rough use in our mountains until I am hunting.
I need kukri for chopping woods, big animals - boars bone and self defense.
From online shop of HI I do not understand which kukri blades are polsh, semipolish or unpolish.
Please recommend me what model to choose for my needs.
I prefer about 12-15 inch long blades.
I do not need souvenir, I need a real, strong workhorse kukri!

The Chiruwa Ang Khola from HI will make you happy to chop woods until hunting in strong mountain.:D You can't go wrong with HI.

Yes that sounds to me that's exactly what he is looking for.

Ang Kholas are heavy duty power choppers. Hard to go wrong with choosing any Ang Khola as your general purpose work khukri.

Just so you understand, 12-15 inch refers to the length overall, NOT the blade length. I agree that the Ang Khola would serve you well, also a BAS at around 24 oz. Polished or unpolished villager models, makes little difference. HI does not make toys, so no worries my friend:D

I'll throw in my two cents. Personaly I use and carry the M-43 from HI. I purchased it after doing some research and finding it would deliver the most power in a chop. Yet the point lines up well for a thrust if it must be used defensively. My purpose as well was for hard survival use as I was having to live that way at the time. Mine has been used to build a couple cabins and numerous other shelters as well as every other task imaginable in the outdoors. These qualities are just as true for the Chiruwq Ang Khola only it is not designed with as much weapons use in mind

Yeah but I still wouldn't want someone to hit me with one.

Hi Alexander
All HI blades are hand made, high quality blades that will serve you for your lifetime. I am born and raised in Croatia, and I think that I understand what do you need these khukri for.
My sugestion would be a 17" to 20" 'Bonecutter' made by Sgt. Khadka, any finish is acceptaable, since you are going to use it hard. Most probably wood handle will serve you better than bone.
AK, and CAK are nice, but I think these are overbuild for your needs, and you do not need any extra weight in the mountains.
HI khukris are measured from tip of the blade to the end of the handle, so 12-15" blade is equal to 17-20" khukri.
Once you decide which one you like the best, email Yangdu, and she will help you to order khukri that you are looking for.
Good luck, and feel free to ask any questions, there is more than a few experts around here, and everybody that I've seen is extremly knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly.

Another thing to consider is I've always heard buffalo horn used as a handle material can become somewhat brittle when used hard in cold weather. I haven't verified this myself though.

Haven't had any problems with the horn handle in extreme cold ahd my M-43 has been in sub zero conditions. However care should be taken with any steel tool exposed to such conditions. Many a woodsman has broken an axe or blade because of it being left out and becming brittle from the cold. There is no problem if your tools are kept inside with you.

Call Yangdu or email her, you are certainly not the first European to order from HI so I expect she has a "plan" for shipping...

Also, keep your eyes on the DOTD (Deals of the Day) here in the HI forum, what money you save on the blade itself might help to compensate for shipping expenses if need be...

Welcome again. :)

Welcome Alexander!

I have nothing to add to the very good advice you've already received here. The AK is the workhorse Khuk, but there is no such thing as a Khukri that can't chop- So you need not agonize over your decision too much. ;)

An 18" (46cm) Villager gets most of my "beater" work, but there isn't one of my collection I would be afraid to fell a tree with- including my Kobra and Sirus.

We are all very happy when someone new discovers the joy of Khukris. :)

We are even happier when we hear that the Khukris will see good hard use.

We are happiest of all when pictures are posted. :D

Welcome again, and let us know what you decide.

OK! Please give me link to DOTD (Deals of the Day) - I am not very familiar with forum!

"Deals of the Day" are posted regularly on this forum. If you read down the threads, you'll see many items titled "Deal for 5/22", "Deal for 5/18", etc. The number corresponds to the U.S. date (5/22 is May 22nd). Look and see if something you want comes up, then email Yangdu and tell her that you want to buy.

In my first post, I linked to the Deal of the Day for May 22nd.

Shipping hurts a bit, but HI blades are a bargain at twice the price. I've paid more than twice as much for other knives, which were nice and work well, but wouldn't out-chop a khukuri.

This thread reminds me of my need for a 16" Bonecutter as well... it would get my recommendation, based on the positive reviews from folk like Hollowdweller who owned one of the originals.

My 15" AK is no slouch though.
