Well guys,

i've got my eyes set on the Hewlet Pecket (HP) model 6515 PDA with among others the GPS & Map function, camera 1.3 megapixels, phone, expended memory SD Card and mini-SD Card slots and of-course the PDA function with loadable programmes (Microsoft Windows CE 3.0)

i'm interested to hear if anyone have experience with this model of PDA, advise or comments.

i'm gonna use it mainly for :
1. Taking Photos - for report and leasure (somethin able to print in 4R will suffice)
2. GPS function cause i neek to know my exact/approximately position when i'm out sometimes surveying new semi-urban sites and cross-reference my position on the State-maps (i works as a Civil Engineer scouting new developmen area).
3. PDA for my daily meetings, notes, calender, address, contacts etc.
4. E-book when i'm bored waiting for meetings or on route for meetings.
5. games, dictionary, translator, scientific calculator, conversion calculator for metric units, medical reference, etc.
6. celular phone
6. back-up lights

i've seen some other model from Dupod, HP nd O2 but not with the basic function i've wanted;
1. usable camera
2. intergrated GPS
3. PDA
4. expandable memory
5. blue tooth
6. WiFi - but not available for the HP 6515
7. celular phone (not important - can live without it as prefer NOKIA phone)

so, any advise or recommendation guys ????

thanks in advance

bob

hey bob just a few things i'd like to mention first.

the hp pocket pc's are a fine piece of hardware so i'll be the first to say "congratulations you lucky son of a bitch" =)

i work as a computer tech/sales and have come into contact with the hp 6515

it is quite a nice pda but there are a few thing i'd like to mention first

in order for you to use ur pda as a cell phone you must have two things
a cell-phone with a blue-tooth transciever
a headset for u to plug into the pda so that you can talk
the pda itself will not act as a cell-phone.. if ur looking for something like that u'd probably get a palm treo

next id like to say that the 1.3 megapixel on the pda will not provide the quality shots your looking for. it would make more sense for you to just BUY a digital camera which you can pick up for pretty cheap. for someone like a civil engineer it may be in your interest to pick up a digital camera which can take atleast up to 4.0+ megapixel shots.

for the issue of GPS locator. personally i prefer just having a normal gps because of the fact that its JUST a gps. i go out into the back woods alot and find that an impact resistant gps makes alot more sense then a fragile pda. O_O but thats all about personal preference.

for the pda function you could not find a better pda. its quite user friendly and i've had alot of returning customers tell me how satisfied they were with the product.

personally i would look into a hp rx1950 (specs below)

Features:
Windows Mobile™ 5.0 software - Premium Edition
300MHz Samsung® SC32442 processor
96 MB user available memory (64 MB ROM and 32 MB SDRAM); Up to 33 MB user available persistent storage memory
3.5" Transflective TFT QVGA; 64K colours; portrait and landscape mode; 240 x 320
Built-in Wi-Fi 802.11b (wireless LAN)
Integrated SD expansion slot
Integrated microphone, speaker, one 3.5 mm stereo headphone jack, MP3 stereo (through headphone jack)
Mobile versions of Microsoft Office software include (Word®, Excel®, PowerPoint® and Internet Explorer) Microsoft® Outlook™ 2002 for Pocket PC
Dimensions: 4.47"L x 2.78"W x 0.5"H
Weight: 5.8 oz

the rx1950 would make more sense for you to use in the office because of the wi-fi interface. you could sync your files from your computer or enjoy and e-book while drinking coffee at starbucks (tim hortons if ur canadian =) )

hope this helps somewhat

FWIW, I use a PDA for GPS and so far (coupla years now) no harm, no foul. Just get a good aircraft grade aluminum case for it (PDair or Innopocket) and a reciever that is small enough (I use an iTrek M3) to attach to your belt and you're good to go. For software I recommend Memory-Map Navigator. Find a good forum for HP users and you'll get all the info you need.

thanks for the reply Jca21 & jhansman,

would you guys be albe to recommend any other model (maybe other than HP) that have the function that i need ???

- PDA
- integrated GPS
- camera 2 MPix or better
- phone function although not important to me, i'm willing to consider without the phone function since i'll still be using my old trusted NOKIA
- bluetooth (optional)
- WiFi (optional)

my requirements is that i only carry one item instead of 3 for the same function as it could be quite restrictive since i'm always in formal wear at the office.

i'm not worried for the 'impact resistance' feature of the GPS since i'll mostly be in semi-urban area and in some sort of vehicle when i'm scouting new area ......

thanks a million

bob

quick question.

would u prefer a windows based interface or the palm operating system?

no preferences .....

heard the Palm OS is more stable and Windows OS have much more downable goodies !!!! ..... but i probably like Windows better

Banshee,
I have the 6315 (6340) iPAQ and it works very well. I was going to upgrade to the 6515 but was told to wait and now am getting a 6915 at the end of the month. They should be in the USA after summer. They have a better processor and Windows Mobile 5.0 pre-installed, the 6515 is Windows Mobile 2003 with an option to upgrade to 5.0

I have a Nokia portable GPS Unit that I hand around my neck and which links to my 6315 via Bluetooth when I go geocaching. Seamless and easy.

Although you can make phonecalls on all of these models, the quality is not that of a normal cell phone like NOKIA. IMO, WiFi and Bluetooth is what sets them apart from Palm and other PDA's and you will not come close the amount of products available to Windows PDA's compared to PALM.

I agree with Fred (Knife Outlet). What good is a mere PDA cum GPS, camera and maybe phone if it doesn't have a built-in vibrating massage tool? I also want mine to be able to fry shrimp. That could be handy if I get stuck waiting for a bus or something; I'd like to be able to fry up a nice mess of shrimp wherever I might happen to be.

It should also come standard with it's own parachute and built in solar panels. Oh and it might need a beeper just so you can get in touch with it if it decides to go skydiving.

hey guys,

found smething that fits the bill .....

it's a Taiwan made MIO A700 & A701 GPS Phone that's kinda cool with;

1. 1.3 Mpix Camera
2. Phone Form like to O2 Atom instead PDA Form like the HP 6515
3. Phone with PDa function
4. Integrated GPS, Bluetooth, Triad-Band GPRS

any experience or comments for this cute little swiss-army-knive of-a-phone ........ i know i know, it doesn't fry, bake, vibrate (at least hard enough) or function as a PFD but we can't have everything right ???? :D

I was sure that the 6515 had a place for a sim chip. My boss got one before realising that his fingers were too stubby and his eyes too poor and every time he wanted to call some one he would lean over in the car and say to the staff member travelling with him 'Henry, please get my wife'.

Delightful kit but the satelite function only comes with a map for one country to our delight when the boss is bitching over I can't find Victoria Island? We respond that he took the map option for South Africa and that Victoria Island is not in South Africa. If he wants Vic Island whilst in Nigeria he should download it as an upgrade.

It is a powerfull tool and needs to have max memory upgrade and then it is a real mean toy.
