Hi everybody,

I just received my new knife - Black Jack Mamba II folder. I like almost everything about it, with the exception of one feature: double thumb studs. I'm right handed, and the left-handed stud just gets in the way while opening the knife. I want to remove or at least shorten it, but I'm afraid it can cause the other one to fall out as well.
Does anybody here know how the thumb studs are affixed to the blade on this knife? Can one of them be screwed or pressure-fitted into another? What would you suggest me to do in this situation?

Thanks.
Alex.

Hi Alex,

I don't know for sure how the BJ thumb studs are attached but any others I've played with have been screwed together. Most were 2-piece (1 male & 1 female piece) but I seem to remember one that was 3-piece (threaded post & 2 female thumb studs).

I've changed a few & had 2 bad experiences while doing so. The stud on a CS Gunsite Voyager was loose & the screw split when I attempted to tighten it. Another time, when attempting to reverse the stud on a SOG, the screw hung up half way off & had to be cut.

I suggest that you have a suitable replacement on hand before attempting to remove the BJ studs as I doubt you'll be able to reuse just one side. Another problem you may encounter in going from a double to a single stud is, if the hole in the blade is not countersunk, the screw head will not lie flush w/the blade.

FYI, I replaced the single SOG stud with a CS double stud. This is something you may want to consider doing. Although you would still have a double, the CS is much smaller than the BJ & it would get around the countersunk hole issue.

Finally, you may want to ask for advice in the Shop Talk forum. Someone there could probably also tell you where to get replacement studs.
