Hi iam new to this forum. Not really new to knives but i am lost when it comes time to sharpen them. I own probably 15 to 20 knives from spyderco benchmade kershaw down to cheap home depot specials. Iam completely lost at sharpening. I know my more expensive ones i could send back to factory to get sharpened but who wants to do that all the time? Any tips and advise on what to buy and how to shapen?

Thanks and sorry if thats a little confusing

You might find more help in the Maintenance, Tinkering, and Embellishment sub forum. There's a lot of info in there already regarding sharpening tips.

But for starters, you could get something like a Spyderco Sharpmaker and then just practice with a cheap knife until you get the technique down. I don't recommend trying to sharpen your more expensive knives until you're getting shaving sharp edges with your cheap practice blade.

WELCOME!

Got specific questions? Post them there and the experts will help you out. No issue is too small or too large. There's nothing we haven't dealt with. ;)

Yup, read through the Maint/Tinkering section for tips. Then go buy a KME Sharpening System and you'll look like a pro sharpener in no time.

I have a DMT Aligner system and it makes sharpening fairly foolproof.
Get a Sharpie or other marker to put some ink on the edge so you can see where metal is being removed, and use a good magnifier.

Personally I'm a fan of learning to freehand sharpen. Go choose a random "garbage" knife (or buy a cheapo for the purpose of learning on), get some stones, and watch a few videos/read on it a bit. After that, its basically all about practice.

I'm no expert, but I've gotten to where I can get any knife I've yet touched to whittle hair with nothing more than a few sheets of wet dry sandpaper and some time. That isn't as sharp as some other guys can get, but its more than enough for my needs. It just took a while of practice before I got there :).

Good luck with whatever you do :).

get the spderco sharpmaker or the worksharp system both are great systems
