Advocate or Magnitude Which Would You Prefer And Why

Just got into knife collecting and recently bought a PM-2. Love the knife. Now I have been looking at Spyderco's new Advocate and Magnitude which will be available soon I hope. This one will be for occasional carry when I'm not out in the field covered in dirt and sweat. The titanium handle treatment on the Advocate really caught my attention but it seems like the Spyder hole on this one may be difficult to open by the finger flicking method due to it being somewhat recessed? The magnitude does not have the hole recessed and seems more apt to function better in this respect. Watching the presentation videos of these 2 models it also seemed that the Magnitude opened with more authority using the flipper; but maybe this is just video perspective. Wondering which of these 2 knives would have the better flipper action and collectible potential if any. May just have to buy both.

I would say neither is collectible. For flipper action you'll have to wait until people have them and provide feedback. I know when the Mantra first came out there were people who experienced a bumpiness upon opening because the washers were indented by the bearings upon assembly. I'm guessing they've address that issue by now.
I'm more interested in the Advocate because of the thin handle, the overall aesthetics and the M4 steel. I'm really excited about this one.

I really like the looks of the Advocate. Being relatively new to knife collecting wanted to get opinions from those who have a lot more knowledge and experience than myself. Really like the flipper design and want a knife where the flipper mechanism works well. My first purchase, a Benchmade 300SN still has me trying to figure out if I like it or not. " For flipper action you'll have to wait until people have them and provide feedback." Good advice but will this be a model that everyone grabs and then becomes non-available?

Personally, I'd take a Stretch over either of them. Knives with flippers and wrong handed locks just don't appeal to me. If forced to chose between those two, I'd go with the Advocate as its blade has less gimmick grinds and the handle finish is kind of attractive.

Future "collector value" is a hard call. A lot of collaboration models do appreciate after they're discontinued. Some appreciate a little, some a lot, some never go up at all. Funny thing is, some of the worst sellers see the most appreciation, although not so funny for Spyderco seeing something they had to close out at a loss now fetching a premium.

I'm with Deacon on this one. While I've been into Spyderco for some time I am not one who will buy into the new knives until I get word from some of the guys here and on some of the groups. My opinion on the matter is to stick with proven models until you get an idea of what yo expect from Spyderco. The Stretch and Para2 are probably my favorite knives from Spyderco. With you already having a Pm2 I would say you should give an Frn Seki City knife a go. So my recommendation would be a BRG Zdp-189 Stretch Frn. You won't be out a ton of money and should you not care for it, it is an easy flip or trade into something you might enjoy more.

I agree, I think the Stretch would be better. But of these two, I would not spend my money on the Magnitude. I would get the advocate for the reasons Deacon says, plus the blade shape is more useful. I would only get the Magnitude if I liked oddball grinds and knife designs (which I don't).

I find both knives very visually appealing, but for the price I'd like to try em' before I buy em'! Not too sure about collectable potential though. I also agree with The Deacon, try the Stretch when you get a chance, I absolutely love them! Really hard folder to beat especially for the money IMHO!

With all of the positive comments about the Stretch I will be checking this one out. Really appreciate the input and suggestions and glad I asked.

I was able to handle both recently at a knife show and I think the Advocate is an awesome flipper and is sure to be a hit.

The Magnitude is cool and also flips well but as already noted is kind of gimmicky.

If I had to choose, I'd get the Advocate.

I'm leaning towards the Advocate myself. If the magnitude is like the Rubicon it was way to fat in the handle and only s30v. It's also about $60 cheaper

Advocate-
M4 steel- real good
price- not so good

Magnitude-
S30V steel- so so
contoured scales- real good
price- bad

If the Advocate had a nice hollow-ground wharncliffe blade I'd surely go with that, otherwise neither grab me. The Advocate does seem the better deal though.

1 really great thing about the Avvocate is the orange peel finish on the ti.

I had the first Regulus made by Dalibor with the same finish. OP (orange peel) at least on the knife I had didn't show Any marks

or scratches. The clip was op too. What a Great finish on ti. I hope the op finish on the Advocate is as good as my Regulus.

Bumping this up.

I haven't handled either, but have owned the Gayle Bradley Custom Flipper (which the Advocate draws inspiration from). A couple notes:
- disappears in the pocket
- incredible slicer and more than capable for anything a regular guy/gal would throw at it
- a little slick in hand (my GB Flipper had a jimped pocket clip that provided an indexing point and additional grip when using the flipper)
- if you are a compulsive knife flipper and love "free-dropping" blades, may be best to look elsewhere

I do have a Magnitude on its way to me. Will post some impressions of it on its arrival.
