AEB-L Purchase

I don't know if this kind of thread is allowed, allowed in this subforum, or what....but:

I would like to buy some AEB-L and have a specific thickness I would like....0.098. That material is not currently available anywhere in the States that I can find in pieces large enough.

So, I contacted Uddeholm-Strip and they have some available in sheets 96" long x 12.2" wide x the 0.098" thick. However, I would have to buy all 13 sheets totalling 440 pounds in ordr to place the order. The current price FOB their plant in Ohio from Sweden is $4.11/pound or $1,808.40 for all 13 sheets or roughly $139/sheet. I only would like one, maybe two sheets and was wondering if anyone else wanted any of the material so that the order could be placed? I was told it would take approximately 8 weeks from time of order to delivery. I have not asked payment terms, however. For now, I just wanted to judge interest and we can work out the details if anyone is interested.

Reply here, or send me an email to watercrawl at hotmail dot com

Thanks,
Adam

I'd be interested in a bit of it. It's about 3/32" thick, which is close to what I've been looking for myself.

Depending on what shipping from Ohio to Louisiana would add to it I would be interested in a sheet or two.

Admiral steel sells 0.1" thick 13c26. The prices are bad, but you can buy it in a much smaller quantity.

I know....and that will be my second choice.

I'd rather see if I can find enough interest in getting this into the country first.

Thanks!

Looks like we've got about half(ish) gone. I'm going to call in the morning and see what shipping costs might be for one or two pieces to parts of the US. See if that information changes anyone's mind or firms up their order. I also want to see what/how payment could work with multiple people paying.

I'll report back tomorrow.

Okay, I think we have enough people to at least make this feasible at this point.

Here are the details from Uddeholm-Strip:

Payment would be by each individual person directly to Uddeholm for your share + shipping. They take Visa, Mastercard, American Express or they do have credit apps if anyone would like to purchase it on credit.

Shipping gets a bit complicated. If you want full pieces (i.e. 96" long x 12.2" wide) it would have to be shipped common carrier. Uddeholm would not charge for packaging, but the freight would be appromixately $100 for one or two sheets and slightly more for more sheets. Basis of shipping was to Nebraska, but he said it wouldn't be drastically different for other parts of the country.

The other option would be for Uddeholm to shear the pieces into shorter lengths and ship via UPS Ground and it would cut down on the shipping costs. Your best bet would be to go to www.ups.com and figure out the costs if you want to do this. For instance, I am thinking about having the pieces cut into 24" lengths. To have two sheets cut to these dimensions and shipped here was going to cost me $57.00.

So, that is the details. If you're still interested, let me know. I would like everyone to send me an email with their details. I'm not on the hook if someone backs out, but I'd feel awful bad if someone did after we placed this order. So what I'd like to do is get everyone's details and how many pieces they want exactly and then I'll pass this information along to Uddeholm. Hope that works for everyone.

Let me know if you've got any questions. My email is watercrawl at hotmail dot com

And it comes bent like a banana by their shearing machine! :grumpy:

It's probably easier to order from alpha, .1085 i think. They will sell you bigger pieces than the single knife size they list. Very happy with my experience ordering from them, got a 4x24" piece (4 gyutos) for $45 shipped.

AKS doesn't have the width and length that I would like. They max out at 2" wide for anything that's longer than 12". I want pieces that would need to be 2.5" x 15".

Maybe you missed my edit. I bought a piece 4x24 from them. They can cut you other sizes.

If you need a sheet it might be better to buy from B-U, but not for most small makers.

I'm still interested in a sheet, will check ups site later and make my final decision and e-mail you. Ernestrome is correct Chuck at AKS will cut any size piece you want if it hasn't already been cut up. I wanted some longer pieces for some large chef knives and he custom cut them for me. Chuck is a great guy.

Eww, yeah...missed the edit. :)

Like I said, I have a phone call into AKS. I know Chuck, and everyone I've dealt with from there, is great people. I've bought numerous things from them over the last years.

Since this will take 8 weeks to sort out, I might call them again and see if they have any that's not cut up yet to tide me over.

Still, if this does work out, I could get the same sized sheet as you for what would equal $14 with shipping here.

You're right. When I tried to organise a groupbuy I didn't secure enough interest so a simple purchase was easier. Should've tried here!

Good luck.

I am still good for 3 sheets. Just emailed you my information.
