Hello all, perhaps I should say Hoss or Larrin. I HT'd a 9" slicer type blade of AEB-L with .096" thick, with nice taper from ricasso to tip of .040" using SGA (that SGA sure does work nice). I used the 2 step method given by Hoss. Allow oven to stabilize at 1725F, put blade in oven allow to soak for 20 minutes, plate quench. Ramp oven to 1975F, put blade in oven, allow time for oven to return to 1975F, then soak for 8 minutes, plate quench. Blade came out of plates nice 'n straight. Placed vertically in dry ice slurry for 20 minutes, blade came out with a nice curve in the last 3" of blade. My desire is to anneal blade, then re-heat treat in an effort to have a straight blade. I did the 3 point clamp in tempering oven and got some warp out, but not totally.
Per an earlier post by Hoss on HT'ing AEB-L he provided the following info for re-HT'ing AEB-L by performing a sub-critical anneal.
To anneal AEB-L wrap blades in foil, soak at 1350⁰F for 4 hours – does not require slow cooling. This is a very good condition to re-harden from. This is a simple sub-critical anneal to allow straightening before re-heat treating in cases of warpage
My question, does the blade require cooling after the 4 hour soak at 1350F before the increasing to 1975F? OR - would it be ok to set oven to soak at 1350F for 4 hrs and leave blade in oven while ramping up to 1975F? As I write this I'm thinking the answer is the blade should be removed from oven while oven is ramping up to 1975F rather than leaving blade in oven for slow heat increase, same as for the double quench from 1725F.
Comments please.
Thanks, Ken H>
