Aero-garden, a TV product for preparedness?

I was watching TV and there was an infomercial for this thing called an Aero Garden. I instantly thought this would be a great emergency preparedness item especially during winter storm time. Also, my wife loves gardening so it would be a quiet way of her becoming involved in preparedness sans laughter. It isn't expensive at all.

Any thoughts?

Survival potential seems nill. Needs electricity to work and is kind of tiny. But it has caught my interest as a potential source of cherry tomatoes and herbs for someone forced to live in a small apartment. Has anybody here actually used one?

Thomas Linton, you have a good point there. You can grow 5 pounds of strawberries in 6 months. HM??? that isn't too much. Though it could make a diffcult Winter slightly more bearable.

Thanks for all the comments,

Chris

I agree: it just doesn't seem big enough to be any more than a curiosity. Plus, you have to buy their 'seed pods'. No thanks, I saw Body Snatchers one too many times....

Anyone halfway handy could do better for far less. A standard, four tube fluorescent fuxture would give lots more light. An old table, some 2 x 4s to build a frame, chain to hang the fixture, plastic trays or pots to hold planting mix (recycled milk jugs in a pinch). You're in business.

quite honestly, if you have water, don't even bother going to all that trouble, just do sprouts.
