hi, i'm thinking of getting the benchmade 806, but i'm worried it might be too big to carry around inconspicuously. does anyone here carry one all the time, or is it just a knife you take out once in a while?

edit: oops!

hi, i'm thinking of getting the benchmark 806

If it is a Benchmade 806, not benchmark, it makes a great EDC. I carry a 710HS, don't leave home without it, and both are quite similar in blade and closed size, the 806 maybe a little longer in the handle. Both are reasonably sized folders, but aren't bulky and fit comfortably in your pocket, jacket etc.

If your state, country whatever allows you to carry it in public, then its a good choice IMHO as an EDC.If the blade length is too long for state laws, go down in size, maybe a 705 or similar, and if you want to stick with Benchmade, find one with the Axis lock, they are great for EDC one handed open and close.

I carry one over a year. In jeans in the backpocket others in the front.

No worry about it since it is in the pocket :D :D unless yoa get it out.. :D :D

Slim, solid, great EDC.

They are great for EDC. I carried an 800 AFCK for probably 2 years with no problems.

I carried the round hole ATS 34 version for two years plus. Took it camping, used it in the garden etc etc...

Held up well except for the liner which was replaced and now needs replacing again. The 806 won't suffer this same affliction.

It is a big knife but carries extremely well, particularly in the tip down position.

AFCK is very fine folder, slim, elegant, fast and has D2 tool steel with good wear resistance (Axis version)...but I think it's for combat or self-defense rather than for EDC usage. It frightens people A LOT! Good urban EDC is sth like sebenza, mini socom, knives under 3,5''. Take a knife without coating if you want to use it and scratches worry you.

I carry a Benchmade 805 (which is the same folder as the AFCK, but with a different blade), and it carrys very well (left front pocket of my Levis) for its' size.

That thing's been in my pocket everday since I've gotten it. Now it's gonna be a contest with which "big folder" I carry with me now since I've gotten my B/S Large spear point  It is a great knife though and after a while you will get used to its size.

I carry a TSEK, which is pretty much the same as an AFCK but with a different blade shape. No problem. I have, however, had several comments about its size. The best was someone calling it a pocket machete.

And please don't fall into the trap of thinking you can only carry one knife every day. Why not convince yourself that the AFCK is for your personal use, but carry another knife to loan out to others? Or one for defence only, and another for every day chores? And a multitool with a saw for survival purposes. Or a multitool with no saw, and a SAK with a saw in the bottom of your pocket. Are you using your pockets to their fullest capacity?--Bear

I think that many people who start carrying knives regularly tend to get knives that are big, then if they continue to carry knives regularly, they settle on something smaller.

I would suggest a good-quality, medium-sized knife to begin with, then if your carry and use experience tells you that you need a "full-sized" knife, get something bigger. A 550 or 551 Griptilian is relatively inexpensive, but certainly high-quality, and all the knife most people need. After lots of experimentation, I've pretty much settled on the BM 940 as my EDC.

As far as the 806 goes, I'm sure lots of people carry one every day. It's not much more conspicuous than any other knife if it's clipped to your pocket. It's invisible in the front pocket of jeans or khakis. If you wear dress pants, it's probably not the best choice because it is a very solid and weighty knife and you'll feel it a lot more than if you were wearing more heavy-duty pants. Bottom line: If you are a casual dresser and actually need a big cutter, the 806 is a fine choice (805 is probably a better choice, but that's a matter of opinion). If you are in an urban environment or need to dress up, your cutting chores are probably going to be smaller, and I would go with something like a Griptilian.

I have carried the BM 812 & 800 since they were first introduced. I have the very early ATS-34 and M2 HSS, and all are plain edge with convex edge grind modification.

Smaller 812 for EDC and larger 800 for hiking, working in the yard etc.

I have my 806SD2 in my pocket right now, just like every day. My work environment is office/urban and the dress is business-casual. In the building I do not wear it clipped, just in the pocket with a lanyard but the clip itself is very inconspicuous.

That said, I also always cary at least one other smaller and prettier knife for use around "polite company".

I've got my 800SBT in my pocket right now, and have been carrying this knife for over 3 years as EDC. I bought one of the satin-finish knives when they first came out, carried it for a few years, then went through a series of knives until I came back to the AFCK. My ex-gf still carries my original knife, and loves it. One of my best friends carries my old 812 (mini) and says it's the best gift he's ever received. I wouldn't hesitate to get one of the 806's.

As long as AFCK fans are reading this, has anyone used chemical means to remove the coating from the blade? I would really prefer a satin finish. :)

The AFCK is an excellent knife for EDC and all kinds of utility uses. If size is a problem, the Mini version is excellent as well. I carry the mini when I want something really lightweight and compact, that still has tons of cutting power.

The 806 D2 is one of the finests folder ever made !!!

I love D2 steel and the axis lock...

Some time ago, when I first bought the 806, the only thing that bothered me was the black blade. Now I got used to it, and I think it prettier this way than if it had a blade without the black coating.

That's a hell of a knife, that's for sure.... :D
