AFCK Blade Chips?

H'lo..

Has anyone else ever gotten any serious blade chips in their AFCK, or any other Benchmade ATS-34 knife? I have one about 1.5mm from the tip, and I can't think of any way I'd have gotten it (based on what I was cutting that night). Is this typical of BM's overhardened ATS-34? Unfortunately, the chip is big enough that I'm gonna have to invest in a xtra-coarse stone to remedy it. Any thoughts?

A few weeks after I got my AFCK I noticed a fair sized chip on it, I had and still have no idea where it came from. I have asked about this problem before and I was told that ATS-34 isn't a consistent chipper. I thought I was the only one- I guess not.

When I first got my AFCK (which I have since sold) it had little chips right out of the box! I couldn't get it to cut cleanly at all so I looked at it with a magnifying glass, several chips became visible. I ground them out, but it left a bad taste in my mouth. The experience, not the grinding.

Try a search on Benchmade and quality. My memory is bad but I think I remember that being a complaint about benchmade's quality control. Also my experience with ATS34 is that the edge rolls very easily. I can't see an edge that rolls easily also chip easily, so they must harden theirs differently than other company's. You might try a search on ATS34 too. I think you will find that it is supposed to be one of the easier steels to get to pass the flex test. They have some nice designs. To bad the quality is isn't consistent.

I had an ATS-34 AFCK that chipper very easily, but the latest batch of 720's have been much better in that regard. I think that BM has made some recent strides to bring their consistency up to par.

I chipped the tip on my ATS-34 AFCK right after I got it. I don't remember the year, but it was an early model. I haven't had any problems since I put a new tip on it.

I've chipped two BMs: an Eclipse/Ascent 830 and a Leopard Cub. I knew I chipped the 830 because I inadvertently hit a paper clip while opening a letter, but have no idea of what I did to my Cub. I have a lot of other ATS-34 knives (about 30-ish from BM alone), and only these two have chipped so far. Unfortunately they're all from BM, so you can guess what my opinion is.

I have had my AFCK for nearly a year now and so far it has been chip-free. I even ground the edge thinner and I haven't had any chips. I know I haven't hit anything metal with the edge, but I will consider my AFCK as being creme-de-la-creme, considering this post!

I haven't had any problems but I have heard a few complaints about Benchmade and their heat treat of ATS-34. Specifically about being brittle.

This has been a common and old problem. This happened to a friend where he tried to lightly pry out a thin gauge staple from a new cardboard packaging. Another incident I witnessed was where a fellow shooter try to loosen a stuck shotshell from its chamber. He used very light and steady pressure and pop, the tip broke. Sure, folders were not made to be pryed with but it was very little pressure used and the shell came out a bit without much resistance. But he did send it back and was up front about how he used (abused?) it and CS gave him a new one. He hasn' t used it much since.

I also snapped off the tip of my afck while lightly removing a staple from cardboard. Was very dissapointing, but I lived by Benchmade and they were nice enough to replace it for me. Have not chipped any yet, but can tell the blades are very hard and would not think it would be tough to do so.
