AFCK vs. Police

Does anyone have both of these knives? Sal mentioned in another forum that the AFCK was based on the spyderco police knife. They have a very similar appearance (especialy the G-10 police). Which would you guys buy if you had to pick? Thanks.

Thats a tough decision. The AFCK is a liner lock, and the police is a lockback.

Right now, I'd probably go for an AFCK. As much as I love spyderco, the AFCK is cheap right now - as dealers clear out their old stock and replace it with the AFCK II.

Also, I think I'd rather have a liner lock with a good reputation than a lockback.

I can't convince myself that it would be ok to run around with a big arse knife with "POLICE" engraved on the blade. Without actually being a police officer, you'd have to either find a way to remove the "POLICE" engraving, or act like it was a gift from the local PD for some act of heroism.

Either that, or you could get a retired police cruiser, paint it black and white, get a fake siren, a radio, a uniform, etc, and become a police impersonator.

The AFCK has a pretty meaningless acronym to people not familiar with it. It has a great reputation, and is currently available for a pretty low price (saw it for $67.50 from a certain dealer in the exchange:dealer forums).

PS - I have the same problem with the "MILITARY." Nice knife, stupid engraving. Just my opinion, though - please don't bother flaming me.

Thanks for your input, and thank you very much for directing me to that dealer, I ordered an AFCK immediately, at that price I'd be crazy not to. Thanks alot!

I was never aware that the AFCK was modeled after the Police model. Other than the hole in the blade, they look nothing alike. As I understand, the AFCK was a joint design by Benchmade and Chris Caracci. The blade hole was licensed by Spyderco. Nevertheless, the AFCK has been one of my favourite production folders.

in this thread:

Sal Glesser himself states:
"Benchmade was having a hard time getting a jumpstart. Lester and Mark felt that the AFCK could do that for them. The AFCK design (by Chris Carraci, Lester, Mark and Mel Pardue) was based on Spyderco's Police model. (If you lay one on top of the other, you will see the pattern similarity). Chris had done videos with the Police Model before designing the AFCK."
Which is why I said that. I didn't mean to imply that benchmade stole the design or anything. I didn't see the resemblence either until I actualy picked up both knives at the local store, handled them, and held them next to each other. I any event, I'm excited about getting an AFCK.

I have both knives, and like them both. My Police is a SS-handled, plain-edge version. My AFCK is the 800SBT, with black blade, semi-serrated.

You really won't go wrong with either. They both are great cutters, IMO the Police is especially outstanding at cutting. It's flat and though some feel it's heavy, IMO the Police is comfortable to carry.

They are both nice knives and I think you would be well served by either. Of course the Wegner is a better tactical utility knife than either.

Ok, no more vague references. It was posted in the Exchange

They unfortunatley sold out of the 800hs plain edge. I was hoping to buy one, but at the moment my knife money is expended. (I do have a bunch of new shiny/sharp friends, though).

PS - I'm not affiliated with newgraham in any way. In fact, I know nothing about them - so maybe check the good, bad, and ugly forum before ordering, just in case.

IMHO the AFCK is the better knife - my AFCK plain edge black blade is my #2 EDC- behind my SIFU - pretty darned good knife - especially for less than $70 ....

Go for the M2 version of the AFCK if you can! It's good cutting stuff.

Professor.

I love both knives. Truth be known, I feel there's nothing the Police does that the AFCK doesn't do at least slightly better -- ergonomics, grip security, action, etc. However, the AFCK is a liner lock, which I don't buy anymore. The Police has Spyderco's well-done lockback. If you're willing to buy a liner lock, then the AFCK is the choice, IMO. Make no mistake though, the Police is an outstanding knife on its own merits.

Look a little farther down the list on the dealer forum. Roger at Bayou LaFourche is selling them below cost, and below New Graham. He's selling the M-2 model for $60.75.

Sorry about that.

Hello,

the AFCK in M2, plain edge or semi serrated is really an excellent EDC. Elegant, solid as a rock, a well engineered liner lock and versatile blade and confortable handle. Really easy to clean. A sure value!
IMHO the best folder ever release by Benchmade. Better in overall design than all the axis locks I have ever used yet.
Also this is one of the rare "weapon" knife (AF Combat K) which turned into a excellent tool knife(AF Camp Knife). It shows its polyvalence.
Back in 1996 I used to call it "Advanced French Cook Knife".
The M2 steel offer you a very pointy and thin blade which is really really strong and Vorpal.

I have noticed the most expensive wood chisels are made in M2. M2 leave wood cuts with a kind of soft patina.

His challengers in the Spyderco family are the Military (CPM440V!), the Howard Viele (with VG-10!) or the Shabaria (VG-10 again!). Knives with deep penetration blades and excellent designs for a EDC.

my two eurocents.

cheers,

JM

I just got my AFCK today. It's beautifull. I love it. I got the 154CM with the black coated blade. Mike Dye (of new-gram) was out of the M2. I'm very happy with my purchase, and even if BL knifeworks sells them SLIGHTLY cheaper, mike dye was a good guy to do bussines with and I highly recomend him. He shiped a few hours after I ordered.

Thanks for the input, everyone.

Last night I saw the prices from Bayou. Dang. It took a half hour of calming meditation to prevent myself from ordering one. I want one really bad, but, the budget is pretty much blown on the recent purchase of a BM 910, a Spydie gunting, a Rekat pioneer II, and a Spydie harpy.

Of course, there are always the credit cards. It's like free money, right?

i love it.buy one.

ya right about the credit cards - the only downside to them , is , darn it, they want ya to pay a bill every month!!!! how dare them!!ruins all the fun LOL - wish i could win some contest w/free credit card usage for 1 year - would have some more neat knive (and guns, and cars, and boats, and.......)would be better than winning 'survivor lol

Our mini-AFCK is now 5 years old, and still my favorite knife. Nothing feels better in my hand! Nothing opens as smooth! The ATS-34 is tempered to perfection, or very close! RKBA!
